Last edited Wed Feb 10, 2016, 08:40 PM - Edit history (2)

Update: Thank You for the message Steve,

I posted an update yesterday although it hasn't appeared yet, this old laptop isn't very reliable and sometimes I have to 'send' things several times. Ms. Maria's date was postponed for the time being, however she has retained pro bono legal assistance from an animal rights firm in her state. Before replying to your message I tried to join the Democratic Underground site you posted a link to, but my e mail keeps filling all of the fields, blocking my name.

I'm sure it's this LT I'm using, so I will keep trying. Thank You again for supporting this Petition, and here is another I just started that might interest you; http://www.thepetitionsite.com/551/782/563/shutdown-breeders-who-supply-animals-to-petco-and-petsmart-/

Here is our e mail in case the Care 2 site goes down for updates;----

Thank You again for the message, I hope the update appears soon because I'm sure there are other supporters who are interested just as you were.

Have a Blessed weekend.

She be takin' a STAND! LOL

Maria Vaccarella, a mother of three who works part time in a nursing home, rejected an offer Wednesday to plead guilty to unauthorized possession of wildlife in exchange for a suspended fine and $35 in court costs, she said.

“I can’t plead guilty to saving a life,” Vaccarella said. “It’s ludicrous.”

Didn't see the 6 months in jail either...this article shows-

"She received a summons in the mail for unauthorized possession of wildlife, which carries a fine of $100 to $500."

She is right of course. What did she do wrong? What did she that caused harm to anyone?

All she did was show compassion for living creatures, if only more of us would do the same.

however I do wildlife rehab and I cannot tell you how many times I have gotten wildlife at death's door because someone with the best intentions tried to raise them with really bad instructions obtained from the internet. It sounds as though she was was instructed on the proper care of the squirrels but there is not enough info to tell.

Whenever possible, it is best to turn wildlife over to rehabilitation facilities.
That has always been my choice. We are fortunate to have excellent rehab
groups nearby.

Having said that, I quote from the article above:

When the mother squirrel abandoned her babies, Maria waited 24 hours before intervening.
She fed them and contacted a wildlife rehabilitator who told her to hold on to the baby squirrels
until May. Under Maria's care, the babies thrived and quickly became a part of her family.

She was following the advice of a wildlife rehabilitato, perhaps that contributed to
the excellent outcome for the babies.

her decision to keep and raise these little creatures should
not be a crime or should she be facing fines or jail time. I repeat she harmed
no one. This is a case of the law gone bad. Protect us from crooks and
criminals not women lovingly raises baby squirrels.

"So I go to court and the judge tells me it’s up to $1,000 fine, up to six months in jail,” Vacarella said. “What is this world coming to? We teach our children to be kind and compassionate and then we end up in the court system.”"
