A cluster of Republican candidates strategizing to win the moderate "lane" in the primary in pursuit of a one-on-one showdown with Donald Trump for the nomination may be in for a rude awakening.

Trump, according to a flurry of early-state and national polls, is the overwhelming favorite of self-identified moderate and liberal Republican voters. Among more conservative voters, he often trails his chief rival for the nomination, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz.

"We always thought Trump and Cruz were in the same lane, but maybe they're not," said Ken Goldstein, a professor of politics at the University of San Francisco and polling analyst for Bloomberg Politics. Instead, he said, there may be "more lanes on the conservative highway."

In Iowa, where Trump and Cruz are locked in a close fight, moderate and liberal Republicans are powering the New York businessman's huge support.

To be Republican is to be a right wing nut job.

WHere's the moderation?

of them. They are extremely conservative on the money side - but they get science and climate change and couldn't give a shit about banning abortion, limiting gay rights, right wing nuttiness, etc.

However, they seem to be strangely silent now. i figure they have their little thing and are waiting to see what shakes out...or in complete shock.

Think of it.

How much money do people in the financial world pull?

What's the median income in the US.

How many people are registered Republicans, Democrats, or Independents.

Then do the math.

7. I agree-- there's this "silent majority" thing...

that may not be that much of a majority, but doesn't like to get involved in the nastiness of politics and is rarely heard from except at the ballot box.

Most of them that I've known had fairly responsible jobs in differing fields, and I imagine would be wondering just how responsible Trump would be in office.

Perhaps, as has happened in the past, they don't like any of the Republicans running, but can't imagine voting for Hillary or Bernie.
