Confederate monuments bill postponed in Senate (AL)

... The Senate Committee on Government Affairs adjourned Wednesday without a vote on a bill by Sen. Gerald Allen, R-Tuscaloosa, that would require local officials to get permission from a state panel before removing or changing state monuments.

The bill's protections, which would also prevent roads from being renamed, aren't limited to Confederate monuments ...

At Tuesday's hearing, Sonny Brasfield of the Association of County Commissions of Alabama said the bill's road-naming provisions would have prevented conversion to the 911 system — many rural roads in Alabama didn't have names until the emergency-response system required them — and would preserve minor memorials such as simple plaques with county commissioners' names on them ...
