by Ryan Haas OPB | Feb. 23, 2016
A spokesman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service confirmed Tuesday that the agency has regained control of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, nearly two months after an armed occupation caused employees to evacuate.
USFWS Assistant Regional Director for External Affairs Jason Holm confirmed the agency, which operates the refuge, will have employees returning to the site of the 41-day occupation soon.
Were still assessing the situation right now, Holm said. Not all employees are back in town at this time.
The FBI said it was able to complete its evidence gathering and clearing of the refuge. ...........

Eleven days after the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge ended, the community of Harney County is taking a collective deep breath.
The fences and concrete barricades that surrounded the county courthouse in Burns are gone, but on the front doors, a new sign asks visitors to leave any guns in vehicles before they enter.
...... After more than five weeks of angst and tension in Burns, things are noticeably quieter in this small, high desert community. But its not quite a return to normal, at least not yet. Even as residents try to reset and to get back to routines, many see Harney County as changed. ........

....... Defense lawyers and their investigators in the federal conspiracy case can visit the refuge between noon Thursday and 5 p.m. Friday, escorted by federal officers.
They will be able to take photos or video but won't be allowed to "remove or disturb any items,'' prosecutors said.
After the arranged visit, government employees "will begin the process of restoring'' the refuge site and preparing it to be opened to the public, according to Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ethan Knight, Geoffrey Barrow and Craig Gabriel. .......

(51,129 posts)You missed the live feed on YouTube during the final hours of the final four? Fiore racing across Oregon from the airport, instead of waiting there to get into Cliven's photo op, all the while with Ammon Bundy's attorney at her side while on the phone with the Final Four trying to talk them out of piling more charges on Ammon (sorry, I mean, trying to negotiate an end to the peaceful camping). Well, I bet you can still watch the videos. She missed Cliven's arrest at the airport. They had a full press going to end the criminal liability of those in jail before it got far worse with another death, and they sure didn't expect to have more than four arrests that night.
What a drama. I'd say it needs to be a film, but what we have already so surpasses what a film would do. At this point a film would be more like highlights. And the story isn't over yet, no doubt.
