Trade chief told oil giant in secret talks that free trade deal could address its concerns over regulations restricting activities in developing countries
The European Unions trade commissioner told the multinational oil company ExxonMobil that a major free trade deal being negotiated with the US would help remove obstacles to fossil fuel development in Africa and South America, documents obtained by the Guardian reveal.
At a meeting in Brussels in October 2013, Karel de Gucht told the firm that the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) could address its concerns about regulations in developing countries that restrict the companys activities.
According to minutes of the October meeting, the hour-long conversation focused on shale gas; geopolitical aspects; EU plans to label tar sands as high-polluting; and a possible reconversion of ExxonMobils liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in the US to export crude to Europe. This would be costly and may take two-three years, the minutes said.
TTIP is perhaps more relevant as setting a precedent vis-a-vis third countries than governing trade and investment bilaterally, the paper says. We think that this third country element is in the interest of the energy sector, and especially globally active companies like Shell or Exxonmobil. After all, companies like Shell or Exxonmobil face the same trade barriers when doing business in Africa, in Russia or in South America.
The commission was in effect saying that once the trade deal was in place, other countries outside it would be progressively forced to adopt the same measures, making it easier for companies such as ExxonMobil to expand into their markets.

Bottom line, set in stone, and - we talk about this at home, and my grandson talks about this at work. The younger people are becoming aware of this corporate shit. And who inflicts it, and who perpetuates it.

(5,178 posts)No shock they are growing more wary. They have known only war & climate change in their short lives. They have seen only the hollowing out of our democracy, our country and our world itself for the benefit of a few shareholders. We will all be gone and they will be left with the fruits of our labors. May their youthful optimism outlast mine.

(50,983 posts)The TTIP and the TPP are designed to perpetuate the cluster fuck corporations have foisted on us.
Right now consumer voices go unheard while corporations and their political representatives abuse us. These "trade agreements" will only make our plight worse.
We want to reverse the damage but the corporations and their allies want to cause more. Corporations like Nestle, Monsanto and Halliburton. The entire pharmaceutical industry.

(399 posts)I was dismayed but not surprised that some of the responses showed little understanding of the ramifications of TPP. I guess when the deal was negotiated in secret with just speculation and leaks for years, it's understandable that many voters would be lacking the knowledge to make an informed decision. That's part of the problem in our country - keep people uninformed, feed them sound bites which the msm can determine which candidates get more sound bites aired, on election day demand photo id's to keep some from voting as if voter fraud is what the big problem is (!) and then when we have a newly elected president all will sing kumbaya and praise democracy for once again working. Wake up America!
