Mouton statue debated at council meeting (LA)

... Thirty-five people signed in to speak to the Lafayette City-Parish Council Tuesday about the monument at the intersection of Lee Avenue and Jefferson Street. No action was taken by the council.

"I'm not here because it's a Mouton thing," Todd Mouton, a fifth great-grandson of Jean Mouton, said. "It's much bigger than the name that thousands of your constituents share. It's about Lafayette."

The Mouton statue, he said, "is undeniably a Confederate monument. It was erected by the few to remind the many."

He urged the council "to be courageous" and move the statue to a museum ...
