WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With U.S. Republicans sharply split over a front-runner they cannot unite behind, a new group is trying to push the country's top elected Republican, Paul Ryan, into the White House race.
The Committee to Draft Speaker Ryan filed papers as a Super PAC with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday, adding to the groups of mainstream Republican leaders and donors with a shared goal: stopping Trump.
Ryan, the House of Representatives speaker who spoke out against Trump for not quickly rejecting white supremacist support, did not appear ready to take on the role.
"He is flattered, but not interested," Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong said in an email on Friday.
Politico first reported the formation of the draft-Ryan PAC.

(15,220 posts)But how does that even work anyway? How can someone new enter the race at this point in time and get the nomination? Aren't the other candidates going to insist that the delegates they've won thus far be taken into account? Won't Trump sue someone like he always does?

(35,699 posts)First they have to keep Trump from getting enough delegates to win on the first ballot.
They they have to hold anti-Trump forces together on succeeding ballots and start pealing away Trump delegates. If Trump is within a few delegates of an outright majority this is not going to be that easy to do.
