Should Democrats help Republicans bring Trump down?

By pointing out his flaws and his uncanny resemblance to Mussolini?

Or should they adhere to the old adage about not interfering with your enemy when they are destroying themselves?

Would Trump really be worse than the present Republican leadership?

Would greatly increase minority and female vote.
Might take back the Senate and make big gains in House.

Against Cruz it would be a lot more like a standard election.

I put this up a few days ago..It looks like it will be Cruz or Trump...
If there were some other choice, but doesn't look like there will be.........According to many here, Cruz is much worse than Trump

Oh...I want to add this...whoever their nominee is, that person does have a chance to become the President of the United States..We will probably win, but.........Cruz could win...if he is the nominee..who knows what circumstances could make that happen, but it could.....

I think that the Establishment and Cruz and Kasich and Rubio are going to succeed in denying Trump the necessary delegates to win outright on the first ballot, kicking off a brokered convention.

Once that happens all hell will break lose, there will be extremely hard feelings no matter who is selected, and the Democratic nominee will have a much easier time getting elected.

They don't need Democrats to help "show them the way" in order to reject Donald Trump in favor of some "true conservative". The GOP needs to carry its own water, leaky buckets and all, and reap the consequences of doing so. Ownership is one of those consequences, and the GOP certainly OWNS it.

but you also probably would like to run again him... You're damned if you don't clearly stake out your ground because its such easy ground to stake out, but you might be helping take him down. Although, the people voting for Trump most likely are the ones in which Democratic influence works opposite. If Dems speak out against Trump it likely means those fools will just want him more. So perhaps its a win, win situation in the long run.

There's no nominee come convention time, and the convention is utter chaos and ruins the Republican chances in November. And neither Cruz nor Trump will be a brokered convention candidate, so the two worst case scenarios of potential Republican presidents are off the table.

Of course, that might benefit Rubio, who'd essentially be the third George W. Bush term and almost certainly an awful president in his own right. But not President Cruz or especially (shudder) President Trump awful.

And to answer your question, yes, Trump would really be worse than the present Republican leadership. We're talking end of the Roman Empire bad when it comes to Trump.

others. I think as it becomes clear that a brokered convention is where we are heading on the GOP side, you will see a lot of folks throw their hats in the ring. Running for President as a Republican will never be so easy. You could swoop down at the last minute and get the nomination.

24. No. Let it play out because ...
Tue Mar 8, 2016, 02:56 PM

... here's what is going to happen:

About 35% of the republican base are "Trumps". He's their guy 'cuz he's gonna make America great again - even though they don't know what that means. Their allegiance to him is unshakable, and if his name is on the ballot - anywhere, they will vote for him. Period.

Cruz has about 20% of the base (mostly evangelicals).

The remaining 45% are mortified at the prospect of a Trump nomination and are voting for "Not Trump".

About 12.5% are voting for "Not Trump Kasich",

About 12.5% are voting for "Not Trump Cruz", and

About 20% are voting for "Not Trump Rubio".

If any of the "Not Trumps" get out of the race, their "Not Trump" votes will spread to the remaining two more or less evenly, give or take a few points. As long as Trump and at least two "Not Trump" candidates remain in it to the convention, it's likely to be brokered.

If it's brokered to anyone besides Trump, the "Trumps" will lose their mind and some, perhaps a lot, will stay home in November. If they broker it away from Trump and Trump runs independent, virtually all of that 35% will vote for him in the general. Either way, a Democratic win is all but assured for the presidency, and nice gains are possible down ticket.

If they give it to Trump at the convention, the 45% "Not Trumps", as well as quite a few of Cruz's evangelicals, will be luke warm to him at best, and many will stay home. Dems win again.

The worst possible outcome - for us - is if Trump is taken out and damaged before the convention (i.e., he just takes his ball and goes home), and the party leaders are able to rally the base behind another candidate. If they could blame Trump's demise on the Dem candidate or the Dem party, so much the better for them. That turns it into the closest thing possible to a business as usual election, and that's their best chance.*

We need to stay out of it, pop some popcorn and just watch the show.

* -- actually - their BEST chance would be for Cruz and Rubio to drop out immediately and let Kasich run straight up against Trump. I think he'd win every remaining primary by a wide margin. I don't think that will ever happen, though. Booger eater and Rube are NOT quitters.
