interesting read! For me the question isn't "should they be legal". That's a yes. The question is what kind of effect they would have on society. That's really for psychiatrists and anthropologists to figure out.

« Should Humans Trust Robots?
What Women and Men Want from Sex Robots

More than two-thirds of men recruited for a sexbot study say they would give sex robots try. About two-thirds of women in the same study say they would not try a sex robot. Those findings come from the first exploratory survey of human attitudes toward sex robots. Such research has huge implications beyond whether humanity ends up using robots for sexual satisfactionit can also reveal gender differences in how people view modern human relationships.
Debates about sex robots typically focus on either the crude robotic sex toys of today or Hollywoods science fiction fantasies such as A.I. or Ex Machina. One U.K. researcher made headlines by calling for a ban on sex robot technology. But there has been surprisingly little effort to find out what people think about robots and sex in the real world. That is why researchers at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts set out to discover out what people think sex robots should look like and what uses of such robots would be considered appropriate. They hope their research can help create a future where robots prove more beneficial than harmful for human psychology and relationships.

I'm thinking you could get a stall in airport bathrooms with a robot for guys like Larry Craig, who hust want anonymous action for $50.00. Vending action, baby.

(101,315 posts)I suppose a few disabled people don't have that ability. If there's no other personality behind the sexual satisfaction, I don't see that most people would have enough interest for it to have an effect on society. If you do get to the point where it's more than just a mechanism you're screwing, then you are in the area of "science fiction fantasies", and the societal implications are about far more than sex.

(101,315 posts)and they are, of course, hand-held. The point is that they are a long existing technology, and not the subject of tedious articles and surveys like the one in the OP. Very few men do use a vibrator for themselves, but people are getting hot and bothered about what use they'd make of a glorified vibrator.

(111,255 posts)A certain type of male wants a sex partner who is always "ready," whose body never undergoes the changes of either pregnancy or age, who never gains an ounce, and who never talks back. It's just a shame that they're so expensive, a lot of men out there would really benefit from having one. And yes, men do treat them as spouses, except for that unpaid domestic servant thing.
Women generally prefer the real thing, complete with emotional attachment, but the appeal of BOB is that you don't have to cook him breakfast.
