Emerson, Lake & Palmer keyboardist Keith Emerson has died at the age of 71.
The news was confirmed by on the bands Facebook page and their official website.
A statement reads: "We regret to announce that Keith Emerson died last night at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, aged 71. We ask that the familys privacy and grief be respected."
Bandmate Carl Palmer adds: "I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my good friend and brother-in-music, Keith Emerson.
"Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come. He was a pioneer and an innovator whose musical genius touched all of us in the worlds of rock, classical and jazz.

I was a huge fan. Guys like Emerson and Rick Wakeman opened musical doors for a lot of people.

(100,068 posts)It was when they were still touring for their album "Fear Of A Blank Planet", and they played a show at the Anahiem Grove. And I'm a huge prog rock fan and especially Steven Wilson / Porcupine Tree. I went of course and saw him in the hallway by the merch booth between Robert Fripp's set and Porcupine Tree's set. One of the few celebrity encounters I've actually met in real life.

(11,443 posts)I remember the first time I heard that. Must have been at least 45 years ago. Still have the LP, although it's not the first one I bought. Just about wore that first one out and had to get a fresh new one a few years later.

(101,311 posts)UPDATE: Santa Monica Police confirmed to Billboard that Keith Emerson died of a gunshot wound to the head and his death is being investigated as a suicide.

Hubby just telling me he thought Keith had colin cancer, so maybe that's why? Still...poor guy.
