http://www.pcworld.com/article/3043464/windows/windows-7-users-complain-of-unprovoked-windows-10-auto-upgrades.html?google_editors_picks=trueAs Microsoft auto-upgrades more PCs to Windows 10, some users are complaining that they werent adequately notified.
Reports of unwanted Windows 10 upgrades have been circulating for the past few days on Reddit and Twitter, after the last Patch Tuesday. These users say they never approved or initiated the upgrade, and were dragged away from their Windows 7 (or perhaps Windows 8) installs anyway.
This is all part of Microsofts plan, of course. Last October, the company announced that it would reclassify Windows 10 as a Recommended update from older versions starting in early 2016, at which point many more users would get the upgrade without explicit permission. That reclassification began on February 1, and auto-upgrades have been rolling out ever since. If complaints are reaching a higher volume now, perhaps its because the rollout is getting more aggressive.
Heres what the Recommended update looks like, according to ZDNets Mary Jo Foley: First, users will receive a notification saying their PCs are scheduled to receive Windows 10 in the next three or four days. Users can click a small link to cancel or postpone the update, but simply closing the window will cause the notification to appear again one hour before the scheduled update time. If users dont cancel or postpone within that timeframe, the update will begin automatically.

(10,749 posts)But MS gives repeated alerts re upgrade to Windows 10. Maybe there are too many so that people respond, or not, automatically. So blaming MS is not a valid excuse.
That said, i just upgraded, modified a to. Of security and privacy settings and I've been pretty pleased so far. It seems to run faster than Windows 8.1. I lost my desktop screen, which is an irritant, but I'm getting used to it, as I have the idiosyncrasies is all operating systems.

(34,845 posts)My distaste of them comes from bogus changes that do nothing to improve productivity, just makes everything look different for the sake of looking different.
The 'Aero' design where they make it harder to tell what you have highlighted.
The 'ribbon' confusion, where they make it more difficult to find menu options.
The utterly pointless attempt to put meaningless icons next to every menu item, thereby making it more difficult for the mind to process.
They say they conduct extensive user tests but none of those three items I mentioned are in any way, shape or form beneficial to users. They are just changes for the sake of changing.

(41,694 posts)KB-3035583 installs the Get Win10 app, but it won't stay hidden unless you also hide KB-112148, and probably a few others. MS can be sneaky when it wants to be so it's back to manual updates for now.

(10,164 posts)I haven't been able to conclusively determine that MS has Win10's dual-monitor difficulties fixed, at least without a pain-in-the-ass workaround. Without that very basic bit of functionality (I rely on two monitors for my work...big, annoying changes to how I work w/ only one), no way I'm upgrading.

(12,483 posts)and switch to an Apple iMac.
Once Windows 10 was installed, it constantly slowed down the PC for the first ten minutes after boot up while it scans in the background and eventually pops up a window giving you a choice of paying to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, or "Do not remind me again."
However, after you boot up again the same background scan begins anew with the same followup pop up window. Very annoying. I couldn't be happier with the iMac now. Thanks of pissing me off Microsoft, your screwup has improved my overall computer experience.

(15,512 posts)Literally wouldn't start. Turned out the BIOS had gotten messed up and by the time I figured it out I'd scrambled my HD which I still haven't fixed. So I got a new HD, loaded Win 7 pro, and am much happier with it. For one thing it runs on all the other machines I have or deal with, and Win 8 (which I had before) simply refused to network correctly.

GWX Control Panel is a nifty little too to keep the Win 10 crap from your PC...
http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/
This is a free tool that can remove and disable the 'Get Windows 10' notification area icon on Windows 7 and Windows 8. Recent versions can also disable 'Upgrade to Windows 10' behavior in the Windows Update control panel and do much more. See the user guide at the Ultimate Outsider blog. You can still download GWX Control Panel as a standalone executable if you don't like installers. Please see the "GWX CONTROL PANEL RELEASE NOTES" section at the user guide for MD5 and SHA-1 checksums of all official releases.

(63,084 posts)Will Windows 10 be a great OS on my seven year old laptop, or will it grind everything to a halt?
edhopper
(33,164 posts)but depending on how old the laptop is, you may wait until you get a new one. 7 years is pretty close to the time limit on a PC.
But the windows update in your service tray should tell you if it's compatable.
here is an article about old pcs.

(7,675 posts)update
Not only that but I checked the view all available updates and Windows 10 upgrade was on the list but was also checked for download
No other updates were checked for download
I had my settings selected of autodownload so the next time I started my computer it would have proceeded to install Windows 10
I reset my computer to notify before downloading updates
I stupid thing is that I have an old laptap that doesn't even have the hardware resourses to handle Windows 10 So the install would either be refused or it would proceed and failed half way through wrecking my computer

If you select the always ask option and check updates again and you will find Win 10 checked in
the available updates menu again even though you have unchecked the update
Microsoft is determined to force every Windows user into Win 10 whether they want it or not and in spite of their computers lacking the resources to install and run it
Microsoft has turned the the PC into a Cable TV set top box model where you will be forced to accept and pay for every upgrade whether you want it or need it
I updated my machine only a month ago and their are now thirty more recommended updates in the dropdown menu Microsoft is purposely force feeding updates to bog down your machine and force people into Win 10
Big Gov has nothing on Big Corp in terms of their determination to control our lives and live in our wallets
The best plan is to assume your Win 7 machine is no longer supported by Microsoft and run it until it starts to fail and buy a Mac

(20,582 posts)I had been postponing it - they gave me that one hour, one day, one week thing .... so I kept saying one week thinking I could head it off completely, somehow. I went out to cut grass and it was installing. I let it finish because I feared losing all my files (I do accounting, invoicing, etc. for a couple of small oil companies a few days a week) and hunted on the internet for a way to get rid of it, which I did. It made me angry though that it would install by itself the way it did after I had chosen to 'postpone' it.

(28,762 posts)Windows 10. Windows 10 download is more than my 5 GB monthly internet allowance. I like Windows 7 and why in hell would I use up my monthly internet allowance and have to pay dish for more data for something I don't even want?
Monk06
(7,675 posts)it has already been downloaded to your commputer with the installer and all the files waiting to be executed
Just like a virus hiding in the background waiting for you to reboot to trigger the install
If you go with the show me updates before installing route you will find Wind 10 'update' already checked
If you disable updates by going the never check for updates route the same thing will happen if you try to update in the future Win 10 will be on the list already checked
If you uncheck it and reboot it will show up again on the list already checked
This is because the entire Wind 10 downloader installer with all the necessary files are sitting in your programs folder without your knowledge
The only solution is to remove the Win 10 install files from your computer and block all future Win 10 updates from Microsoft
The following utility does that and appears to work after I installed it and rebooted and checked Win Updates three times The download is free and it works
It's called GWX Control Panel
