Only Bad Options Left for Republicans

Political Wire:

It’s increasingly clear there are only three options left for Republicans in picking their presidential nominee:
- Donald Trump becomes the party nominee by winning 1,237 delegates.
- Ted Cruz becomes the party nominee through a contested convention.
- Someone else is picked by a contested convention, bypassing the two largest delegate winners.

All three are really bad options.

The first two options mean that Republicans would pick someone who has been hostile to the party and its leaders. The second and third options would unleash a torrent of anger at the party and possibly spur a third party bid.

It’s hard to see Republicans beating Hillary Clinton in a general election with any of these options. The odds would at least be heavily against them.

It essentially guarantees a loss in November as the bulk of Trump supporters would revolt (and support a probable third party run by Trump).

I never really thought for a second that the Republican establishment would do this, but I'm starting to rethink it a bit. Josh Marshall at TPM has written a couple of pieces suggesting that if prominent Republicans are convinced that they're going to lose either way, losing with their preferred candidate and pushing the conflict to the surface may be the best option from the long term perspective.

We'll see.
