Ohio, or Rubio in Florida, or both, the chance becomes extremely high that Trump will end up with the most delegates but will not win on the first ballot.
If that is the case, we have a brokered Republican convention and all hell will break loose making their chances to win the general very low and it makes their chances of keeping the senate very low.

(32,886 posts)any even remotely known Republican start jockeying for position for the likely event the convention goes brokered. And why wouldn't they? What would be the downside? A lucky turn of events and they are the Republican Presidential nominee without having to do one one hundreth of the work normally required. Besides the folks currently still in the race for the GOP nomination, I think these folks could be involved and this is by no means an exhaustive list:
Mitt Romney
Sarah Palin
Huckabee
Jeb
Gingrich
Rick Perry
Rand Paul
Lindsay Graham
Paul Ryan
Mitch McConnell
John McCain
John Cornyn
Steve Scalise
Imagine what that would look like. Imagine what the Trump supporters, who are already becoming violent, would do if they thought he would lose a brokered convention after getting the most delegates.
This is political genius. Go Kasich!!

(31,828 posts)I wonder if they hate the idea of Trump winning more than they love the idea of Clinton or Sanders winning?
I.E. - Trying to stop Trump because they know that regardless of who wins the Democratic Nomination - they will be a million times better for the country than anyone on the Right?
they don't want Trump to win because he is so dangerous

(15,222 posts)Kasich only seems sane because, well, look what he's up against!!! LOL
In all seriousness, however, he is completely anti-woman.
He also sounded like an idiot this morning on a CNN interview after he'd just voted. He wants everyone to believe that he has only NOW realized the rhetoric that Trump has been using. He specifically said that Trump's remarks about women were appalling. Kasich said he's been focused on his campaign and not focused on the campaigns of his competitors.
But Kasich has been on the same debate stage as The Donald, so his argument seems a bit unrealistic.

(50,279 posts)about calling women names at the first debate. What is really puke-worthy though is the pledge these characters made to support the GOP candidate even if it's Trump.

(59,504 posts)Here, though I think they are hoping that Kasich could emerge as the consensus nominee -- and he likely is better than the other three. Just as we know on the Democratic side that the states that have voted include more southern states than northern states. If the tide moves against Trump and more people reject him, if the choice is Cruz and Kasich, it is possible that Kasich could end up with as many delegates as Cruz. In this scenario, where Trump is kept below 50% - with most delegates earned early, so people could say that he failed - if Kasich either beats him on delegates (unlikely) or is second, with Cruz third, he could win if most DELEGATES are themselves party stalwarts.
To me, the ONLY Democrats who might be likely to do this are ones, who 1) see this as a likely Republican year and want a saner nominee AND who are not really in either the Sanders or Clinton camps. The race is too close between Sanders and Clinton for anyone with a real preference to not cast their vote there.

(4,490 posts)Despite Michigan, I do find there's still quite a few people who find Hillary Clinton's victory inevitable. Also Trump has become increasingly worrying while Kasich has pretty good approval ratings in Ohio. Could it be a backfire of Clinton supporters and campaign workers talking down their opponents too much?

(59,504 posts)but are completely terrified by the idea of a President Trump.
However, they are voting for their own governor, who we know opposed unions and was allied with Club for Growth. This means he is not either a liberal Republican (that once existed - Rockefeller, Javits, Case, Heinz ... or even a moderate Republican.
As you are from the area, could you speak to what Democrats are like in that area for those of us who have little knowledge of Ohio? I can see from the map that it is next to West Virgina. How did Democrats in this area vote in past primaries?
Thank you for this fascinating, on the ground report.

(722 posts)Would you rather face (a) a 50% chance of being punched in the stomach, or (b) a 10% chance of being shot in the face? The cross-over Kasich voters are choosing option a.

(55,745 posts)"My elevator pitch is that the United States has a grotesque level of income and wealth inequality where the top one-tenth of 1 percent owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent, where almost 20 percent of our children are living in poverty, 40 percent of African-American children are living in poverty. We are moving rapidly toward an oligarchic form of society where a small number of families control not only the economy but our political system as well. It is imperative that we develop a strong political movement that says to the billionaire class they cannot have it all." -- Bernie Sanders
