(20,885 posts)He may have observed that the selection of the president was a chaotic event. That is, a convergence of seemingly independent events that make outcomes unpredictable. Morons are ultimately inevitable!

The quote above is in fact an argument against democracy based on the premise that regular working people are simpletons. It's really not all that savory. It's really the point of view of the right or of the top bit of the 1%.
Trump is exactly the sort of person Mencken said should be in charge, he's a proven business engine and by having more money he's also earned the right to rule.
Mencken would have hated Bernie Sanders. In every single way. He loathed Jews.
But yes. He was clever.
