Meet Dawn. Dawn is one of the Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuarys six resident foxes that cannot be returned to the wild.
Most of the animals that find their way into the sanctuary are injured wildlife that are treated and then returned to their wild homes. But Dawn was a bit different. She was brought in as a young fox by a person who found her and thought she was a dog. You can hardly blame the person for thinking that, she certainly acts just like a domestic dog, rolling over for her belly to be scratched and licking Geoffs (one of the sanctuary workers) face.
Dawn was far too tame to be returned to the wild. She wouldnt be able to fend for herself. Dawn is a cutie, and acts just like youd want a pet to act, but it is important to remember that she was never meant to be anyones pet. Foxes are adorable, but they belong in the wild.

(205,292 posts)I used to go to the Western North Carolina Nature Center with my grandmother and they had animals like that there, animals of all kinds that had been injured or for some reason couldn't be returned to the wild, and my heart went out to them.
I remember one time that we spotted a red fox which was loose in the cemetery that was next to the office where I worked. The police had showed up and many of us kept a watch to make sure nothing happened to the fox.
The police kept trying to capture him, but he kept just out of reach. It was when one of the cops threw his glove on the ground in frustration and the fox picked it up and ran off with it, like a dog who was playing, that we realized this was not a wild fox!
Turned out that this was a fox who had gotten loose from an animal place just up the road and the owner, with his kids, showed up to claim the fox who must have been treated like their pet. We were quite relieved...

(11,254 posts)When my wife moved to NYC from Japan, she brought her Shiba Inu- in the year 2000, they were not well known in the US (now we see a lot of them in NYC) - the customs lady said, "you can't bring a fox!!" My wife did convince her that it was in fact a dog and hit through customs.
