A brave Russian special forces soldier who was on a Rambo-style one man mission to hunt for ISIS militants died a "hero" after calling in an airstrike on HIMSELF.
The fearless officer was directing Russian airstrikes at Islamic State targets near the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria when he was surrounded by terrorists.
Not prepared to go down without a fight, he ordered military officials to drop bombs on his location and died in the blast.
A spokesperson for the Russian military said: "An officer of Russian special operations forces was killed near Palmyra while carrying out a special task to direct Russian airstrikes at Islamic State group targets."
"The officer was carrying out a combat task in Palmyra area for a week, identifying crucial IS targets and passing exact coordinates for strikes with Russian planes.
"The officer died as a hero, he drew fire onto himself after being located and surrounded by terrorists."

(7,895 posts)How many civilians have been murdered by the air attacks supposedly aimed at ISIS?
I don't advocate here for ISIS or for tolerance of their horrible reign of terror. I do ask about the so-called effectiveness of the bombing campaigns and who was actually targeted and hit.
I don't believe the hype from the Russians any more than I do that from the War Hawks in DC, Riyadh, Doha, Damascus, Ankara or Jerusalem.

I don't disparage the possibility of the "noble warrior". I doubt very much he was present in this instance. Russian hype has been to paint the actions in Syria as patriotic and noble. Since they have a long documented history of misrepresenting facts regarding field missions to favor their positions I have reason to doubt. Something like this kind of exaggeration for effect is SOP.

(307 posts)US supposedly conducting air strikes against ISIS for the past two years= ISIS gains 10 times the territory they previously held and make millions selling oil through Turkey.
Russia commences bombing of ISIS in Sept 2015 and achieves decisive victory over ISIS taking back most of the territorial gains within 6 months. Russia also exposes ISIS's Turkish oil sales while US State Department denies it is even taking place.
Meanwhile the King of Jordan just revealed in the Guardian UK today that Turkey is aiding ISIS. Link to that Guardian UK story. http://www.democraticunderground.com/10141392328

(53,339 posts)He was commanding a company of the 1st Cav when it was overrun and he called in fire on his own position. Many of his men died, and all of the survivors were wounded. He was severely wounded himself, and his First Sergeant died in his arms with all of his limbs blown away. The Army investigated him to determine if he had acted properly. He was cleared and was awarded the DSC.
I knew him on a subsequent tour when he was commanding the Security Guard Detachment that guarded HQ U.S. Army Vietnam and the General Officers' compound at Long Binh. Every man in the detachment was a hand-picked combat vet, including the commander.
One thing I remember about him is that he had two shaving kits filled with all the meds he had to take as a result of his injuries.

(58,724 posts)It's amazing how quick some are to believe a "Russian military spokesperson" in a press release from the state-run Russian news agency TASS, eagerly repeated by right-wing UK tabloids like the Mirror.

(58,724 posts)The same scrutiny should apply to a statement by a Russian military spokesman, if not more.
Yet, that doesn't seem to be happening here for some reason.

(13,661 posts)So don't apply your anti-Russian leadership mindset to the Russian people. That kind of crap is what allowed and perpetrated the Cold War, which our military seems to be trying to kick-start.

(1,134 posts)I recall awhile ago watching a documentary about some US forces in Iraq. Some special forces team was pinned down and surrounded by enemies, and they basically called in airstrikes directly over them. Some of them were wounded in it, but were not killed. But it could have went much worse for them if the pilots were off just a little.
It seems very plausible that this Russian soldier could have died during a similar situation. Do they spin it a bit? Maybe. But that's nothing unusual. Either way, the solider was killed fighting ISIS and I think he deserves to be honored for that. I'm not going simply assume it's all bullshit just 'cause it's Russia. If some evidence of it being completely fabricated comes out, then by all means go after it, but until then I'm going assume it's at least somewhat based on reality.

(110 posts)If my choices were
(1) get captured by the guys that burnt a Jordanian pilot alive in a cage
Or
(2) call in an air strike and take as many of the head hacking scum with me
I'd go (reluctantly) for option two. Neither are palatable but one is less horrific than the other.
