NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Most parents have months to prepare for their new baby. Kaitlyn Furchert and fiancé Lawrence Beal of McCook had less than three hours.

Furchert was taken to the emergency room around 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 because she was having severe abdominal pain. Outside, there was a blizzard; some of the snowdrifts in the couple’s driveway were as tall as Furchert.

“We got stuck leaving the house,” Furchert said. “He dug the Jeep out for 30 minutes and got us to the ER. I told him he could leave to get the driveway to where we could come home.”

Pam Minary, a registered nurse and a lactation consultant at McCook Community Hospital, was in the ER that evening and asked Furchert if she could be pregnant.

Missed periods, nausea, heartburn, severe back pain - that's a normal setting for some!

Could be normal. Chocolate cysts can feel like that - I've bloated to looking five months pregnant. You also have cycles where you don't ovulate. I'm probably going really deep here - but my miscarriage at 4 and a half months I had symptoms but chalked it up to endo for 2 1/2 months. Only found out because I was going in for an abdominal cat scan.

until this very thing happened to a woman I knew well and saw almost every day for years. She had her ER event take place on her birthday, thinking she was having some scary health nightmare, ended up having another birthday to celebrate. I knew this woman and she was highly educated but had no idea, she was on the pill never missed a monthly thing...
