(10,565 posts)I thought they were part of the establishment problem. The reality is that Edwards victory is a template to win back red states.

(10,565 posts)The fact remains hard left candidates will struggle in red states-I'd rather have a guy like him than some knuckle dragger

(13,871 posts)I looked at your profile and saw you were in Nashville. I know it's a great town and pretty liberal but your state is about as regressive as my spot, SC.
Any way we can get Dems in office, and especially statewide office, is good and has good results like this case from LA.
Really do like Nashville, I was born there 65 years ago but have lived here since I was 2.

(95,337 posts)Look, I'm no fan of moderates but the Democrats have not been doing a good job of winning statewide races in Louisiana. My preference for any race would be the more progressive candidate.
However in the end it was Edwards vs Vitter. And finally David Vitter's sordid past with prostitutes got the best of Louisiana voters and they opted for the Democrat.
To me on John Bel Edwards absolutely worst day ever as a Democrat is still a far cry better than any day the GOP could give us. And the fact that Edwards has rescinded the anti-LGBT laws that Jindal created is a major win in my book. He also enacted Obamacare too.
So please tell me why I should hate this guy? Is there a single issue that says 'Don't vote for him because of this one issue' because many of us do not work like that. People's civil rights are getting tramped on left and right, if we can elect Democrats who will protect them then this is good.

(24,329 posts)We've run moderate Democrats in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia...
In Arkansas we have no House members or Senators
In Louisiana it's 5-1 Republican with 0 Democratic Senators
Mississippi it's 3-1 and 2-0
Alabama 6-1 and 2-0
Georgia 10-4 and 2-0
and that pretty much goes on throughout the south
So, unless the template is run against a guy whose past is so corrupt and amoral that even his supporters will jump ship it's not a viable template.
Edwards ran against a really bad candidate
I'm not sure there is a 'template' for winning in the South or in any other region or state
It's sort of a case-by-case basis.
If Edwards is successful his administration could be a model for Democrats in the south and in some of the less Democratic friendly states - though I had hoped Schweitzer would have been a model for a few more of the Mountain States
Not knocking the south or Edwards. I'm just not sure what it will take to break that lock -- I feel the same way about some of the Plains states (SD, Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota (to a lesser degree)

(301 posts)Rest assured, the next governor will be another Republican blowhard determined to make us look as ignorant and ridiculous as our Mississippi neighbor.
I love my home state and I'll never leave it but there's no denying our politics, this one bright spot notwithstanding.

(6,917 posts)Idiot Republicans have cloned Vitter and that's the formula they think will win. But they can't run "Not Obama" after 2016 LOL.
Louisiana voters are uniquely rebellious, and are starting to smell a rat from Republicans. Another $750 million deficit left by Jindal just may seal the deal, and make them rightfully skeptical of more Republican schemes.
But 2019 is a long way for Edwards to fix the mess or lose his job. The ball's in his court.

(301 posts)Probably other issues as well. But I know what you're saying and I do think he needs a "moderate" on the ticket. A swing state moderate would likely be better though.

(24,329 posts)You remove a Democratic governor from a state that reflexively votes Republican turning control of the state back to the Republicans
Edwards offers Clinton or Sanders very little in the way of positives as an addition to the ticket.
Besides, the Party is already fairly sparse when it comes to Governor's.
The Party needs to build statewide organizations that elect Democrats throughout the state. That's part of what Governor's try to do
The Democratic Party needs him in Louisiana working to re-build that state
on edit: I also will remind you how close we came to losing Biden's home state when he became Veep. Had it not been for the witch being the repub nominee that seat would have gone Republican
Hiraeth
(4,805 posts)Edwards offers a lot and Yes, the party is sparse all over.
The party does need to build.
Biden was NOT my choice and you are right.

(95,337 posts)I like JBE but no way for VP.
I think one reason we lost 2000 and 2004 (other than voter fraud) was that we had boring tickets. Neither Al Gore nor John Kerry had strong personalities that inspired the voters like Barack Obama or Bill Clinton. However, Gore and Kerry could have done better had they opted to pick better VPs that could bring that inspiration. Joe Lieberman and John Edwards (the former NC senator) were both boring VP choices that essentially made the ticket two boring white men. These did little to reach out to minorities and women.
Mind you Hillary and Bernie do have the appeal to reach out to the voters but rest assure the GOP VP candidate will be someone who will have appeal to either women or minorities (even if it is someone not too qualified like Sarah Palin). The Democrats should be picking someone that could inspire women and/or minorities in a huge way and I think top two candidates are either Julio Castro from San Antonio or Senator Cory Booker from NJ. Hillary and Bernie bring experience and either of these men would bring youth and charisma to the ticket to ensure a win no matter who the nominee is.

(95,337 posts)Joe Biden was a senator and a damn good vice president. I think Cory Booker, also a US Senator, would make an amazing vice president and a potential great president. I think he has an appeal to young voters, minorities and even women. He's progressive and he is a great speaker and he could get the voters excited to turn out and vote. I would take Cory Booker any day over John Bel Edwards as VP.

(1,151 posts)Booker is
1: Too conservative/close to Wall Street (at the very least, defending Bain fucking Capital means he'll never win a primary, every primary opponent will beat him over the head with that and the fact that the RNC borderline endorsed him)
2: Too supportive of privatized/charter education.
I mean he's great everywhere else but he's just too economically conservative to win a 2016, let alone a 2020 or 2024 Democratic (much more liberal future electorates) primary.

(790 posts)I actually think the guy is pretty progressive. His first week in office was dedicated to getting the Medicaid extension to Obamacare so that Louisianans of modest or poor means could get healthcare - something Jindal's vile ass refused to do for the entirety of his useless time in office.

The first place I'd stop is the Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter for the best coffee n' chicory and beignets in the WORLD! Then, for lunch, some crawfish and dirty rice washed down with Dixie beer. For dinner, a huge oyster po'boy drenched in hot sauce while sipping on a Hurricane and listening to some groovin' zydeco. Damn, I miss that place!
