PoliticusUSA: The media is making Trump pay for his lies. Today, CNN fact-checked Trump with an onscreen graphic that called out one of his lies as they played the video.

(58,654 posts)I hope it continues. I just wish they'd stop with all the free publicity.
gratuitous
(82,849 posts)As long as the major media outlets are going to put the lie to Trump's words like this. It won't take long before Trump either changes his ways (which I don't think is possible) or his credibility is in such tatters that even Fox won't stick up for him anymore (which may be unlikely, but still possible). It's long past time that objective truth re-enters our political discussions and this "some people say" nonsense is consigned to the trash heap. Trump can't say one week that he wants Japan to have nukes and then the next week say he never said that. There's no controversy over the facts in an instance like this, and it is just not that difficult for the media outlets to say that if they're interested in the integrity of their own reporting.

(5,141 posts)I'm sorry but they don't deserve praise for doing their job now when they should have been ignoring him instead of shoring up their miserable ratings.
They deserve each other.

(13,864 posts)The media basically pushed Trump on the country with all his free minutes on a nightly basis. The election feels a bit scripted to me.

(5,141 posts)A lot of us have been saying that all along...it's too surreal. I sometimes wish I could live another 100 years just to see how history recalls this election year.

(23,760 posts)for many in this country sells. The problem is many low IQ folks confuse politics with entertainment. Last summer when I was in Europe, people there were amazed that the citizens of the US were evening considering him! Now they shudder and worry!

(13,864 posts)He was drawing thousands at his rallies last fall and couldn't even get on the news cycle. What a story-he starts at zero and look what's happening, thousands of people are being moved by his message. The corporate media could have had major ratings by hyping Bernie-why didn't it happen?

So this is 2016 Democracy?
All television, anything live, and new sites MUST let those that have an IQ that equals their age that Trump is the REAL PROBLEM, and may everyone else's Supreme Being save those that did not vote for this "reality start" p.o.s. idiot.
You are so right.

(280 posts)A winning campaign strategy against Trump is to play his videos showing his myriad positions on the same topic. A winner for sure.

(115,691 posts)that shit's getting real and they'd better do some actual reporting on this asshole. It was all fun and games for awhile because he was a novelty, but maybe they're beginning to notice that he's actually dangerous and they have a responsibility to tell people, truthfully, how terrible he is. No more false equivalency.

Would have been hard to find anyone with higher unfavorable than Donald. Only one person is close.

I know he's always taunted them and made his goons boo them at his rallies, but maybe the press conference about his donations to veterans' groups was the turning point at which even the reporters' bosses decided it was time to reveal that the emperor has no clothes.

(3,041 posts)If I were a Trump supporter and the media suddenly turned on him, I would probably believe that it was the media with no credibility -- not Trump. The media has done this to themselves - their credibility is shot. Now all of a sudden they want people to believe them instead of their own lying eyes and ears? This will not work for them, but it's good that they're at least trying. Then again, maybe they're only doing it to cover their own asses and say, "We tried to warn the people" if Trump is elected.

(37,748 posts)I don't think the media feels regret; rather the opposite. Trump has been great for ratings during the primary, and in the general, I can only imagine he will boost them further still. Anything a profit-oriented newsroom can do to foment righteous rage (for or against a given candidate) simply means a greater audience.

(10,749 posts)Trump: I never said Japan should have nukes.
CNN: He lied. On xx date he said Japan should have nukes.
Trump has made it clear that he has nothing but contempt for the press, and I think it's not unreasonable for the press to respond accordingly. So what if he doesn't consent to interviews or do his idiotic call-in interviews. You can't stop the press from doing its job. And if that is what it takes, so be it.

(28,552 posts).. y'all think the electorate cares about "facts".
Politicians are not about facts and they have not been for decades. The news media is not about the truth and it hasn't been for decades.
We live in a post-fact political climate where lies are as good as truths because every politician at that level is an accomplished liar and most people have figured that out.

(5,818 posts)IMO, this is an EXTREMELY important development if other cable stations and the broadcast networks emulate CNN graphics.
Like any other TV personality, Trump knows that what's most important is having the camera focused on you, and that it does not much affect what you're trying to advertise whether or not viewers have turned off the audio.
Trump repeats the same lies over and over again. Even if you have the sound turned down, you associate Trump's face with "Japan and South Korea should pay for their own nukes", "Obama has tanked the economy", "Mexicans are rapists", "Muslims threaten our national security", etc, etc.
With a relatively few transparencies prepared in advance to be overlaid under Trump's face, CNN or any other station can turn the free publicity they love to give him from positive to negative.
Marshall McLuhan would have been very proud of CNN producers today.

(7,188 posts)Weird because I don't believe Issa even likes Trump.
Issa kept saying 'President' Trump would be okay because would surround himself with knowledgeable advisors.
Wolf asked him about Japan getting nukes, and Issa said Japan had cooperated with small military and paid us a lot of
money to have bases around them.
Wolf ended the interview segment by saying, I've had numerous conversations with Trump about this and he does not agree with you - Trump believes Japan doesn't pay us nearly enough.
Issa weakly smiled knowing he was caught.

More than a little irony in Trump now whining about how unfair the media is, how they are not treating him fairly, after all the free "all-Trump-all-the-time" coverage they have lavished on him for lo these many nauseating months.
