I am in mourning. Horrified. Tears.

(7,820 posts)Whether that was part of the shooters intention I don't know, but wouldn't surprise me. Whole thing is just heartbreaking.

(838 posts)I know it was Latin Night, but with the xenophobia and anti-immigrant attacks I thought that it's also an angle worth mentioning.
Normally in times like these my (ex) journalist instincts kick in, and I try to keep an objective distance. Instead, I've been barely holding it together today. God, what a hideous day.
TDale313
(7,820 posts)And like I said, it would not surprise me if choosing that club on that night was intentional. Racism, misogyny, and homophobia so often go hand in hand (reports coming out that the shooter's ex wife says he beat her. Former co worker talking about complaints he filed about the shooter making racist and homophobic rants)

(7,820 posts)Also, not the one who first brought up the fact that many of those killed were also Hispanic. Because it was Latin Night. It's not out of line to wonder if picking that night was totally coincidence. He targeted a Gay nightclub. Homophobia his main motivation IMO. As I said in another post racism, misogyny and homophobia often go hand in hand. A former coworker has come forward about homophobic and racist comments he made.
We don't if he was inspired by Isis or directed by Isis or neither. That has not been confirmed. Assume away.

(58,724 posts)There is no reason why this person could not have had antipathy towards a wide variety of people for various reasons.
I had a post hid because I said "Muslims hold grudges because of the Crusades, especially for what King Richard did at Acre". I was called a bigot and everything else in the jury comments.

(111,254 posts)whose only charge in life came from dehumanizing other people and eventually killing them. There were plenty of warning signs about this piece of walking shit, but not everybody who issues those signs acts on them. He did.
I am glad he is dead.
He could just as easily have been an ultra far right "Christian" as a "Muslim" nutcase. C'mon, you know this.

(19,564 posts)His mother yesterday.
The plight of a mother who has been unable to contact her son after the deadly shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, brings home the anguish felt by loved ones still desperately seeking information.
Christine Leinonen said she "just happened" to wake up at 3 a.m., about an hour after the shooting started at the club, Pulse. She saw a friend of her son, Christopher Leinonen, post on Facebook that there had been a shooting at the club and that he didn't "know where his friends were."
She told ABC News that she believes her son is dead but she has not received official confirmation from authorities.
Christine Leinonen told ABC News that her son's friend Brandon told her he saw that Christopher Leinonen's boyfriend "had multiple gunshots and was being taken by the ambulance but he never saw Christopher [come] out. And we haven't been able to call him or text him."

(128,905 posts)What a sad thing. She had a basketball scholarship and was to start college this fall (in FL). Her family had just traveled to Orlando for vacation along with a couple friends and cousins, and they had been dropped off at that club by her father... Then he received the tragic call from her about being shot in the arm (and she apparently succumbed to that while hiding in the bathroom).

Fear, bigotry, ignorance, hate - all killers in one form or another. All make us less as a people because we all pay for the damage each can cause.
I am so sick of the dying.
Thank you! I needed to name them. I am happy people are telling us more about the lives of the victims.
RIP
