This is a wonderful meme going around, author unknown, about what it would be like for men buying guns if we treated guns like abortion:
Whats particularly brilliant about this is both guns and abortion are constitutional rights. So if you can limit abortion to this degree, why not limit guns to the same?

No, Major, I think I've got it. Women shouldn't have to endure these terrible things in order to exercise a right. Wouldn't it be poetic justice if men had to endure something similar in order to buy a gun? Because male hegemony, because Republicans, etc.
But it isn't only men who buy guns. And it isn't only Republicans. So the meme isn't really about liberation and empowerment, as you seem to think it is. It's about doubling down on injustice.
Stick to the GIFs.

(36,827 posts)I was already pretty sure you didn't get it, and now I'm certain of it. Has nothing to do with "poetic justice" and everything to do with hypocrisy. The fact this has to be explained to you proves my point.

(6,625 posts)They're one and the same, Major. Surely you can see that. In case you're having trouble, I'll explain it again.
The meme names one injustice and suggests a parallel one. "Poetic justice" would mean equal treatment for both constituencies and their Constitutional rights. Infringing on rights in one case while demanding rights in the other is hypocrisy.
So what would the proponents of this meme like to see? More restrictions on guns, or fewer restrictions on abortion? Surely they can't want more restrictions on guns AND fewer restrictions on abortion. Because that would be ... hypocrisy.
Capisci?

(13,889 posts)It's an imperfect analogy, but I'm sure Swift's recipes for roasting babies weren't kitchen-tested either.
Straw Man
(6,625 posts)Swift was arguing against the economic enslavement and exploitation of the Irish. His metaphor was perfectly apt. Hyperbolic, but apt.
This meme tries to argue against Republican and fundie inconsistency on Constitutional rights, but it trips over itself when you try to apply its point. The point is that they are hypocrites -- OK, fine, but then what? Following the logic of the meme, a Democrat who argues for gun control and simultaneously argues for better access to abortion is also a hypocrite.
It is presented as a pro-gun-control argument. Either it isn't really, or it's an endorsement of hypocrisy: "Our hypocrisy is better than their hypocrisy!"
Frankly, it's a mess.

(32,081 posts)Sorry you didn't know that. So according to you there should be no restrictions on buying a gun. Felons and the mentally ill can get abortions. So, according to you they should be able to get a gun.

(4,187 posts)Why are women being forced to wait 1-6 days? Why are they being forced to hear prepared anti-abortion scripts delivered by their physician? Why are abortion clinics being held to the same arbitrary standards as hospitals? Are those not restrictions?
You really should see this:

(32,081 posts)A woman can get an abortion for any reason at any time in the U.S. Yes some states have passed laws which harass the process but that is all they do, they don't stop it. And many of those laws have been overruled by courts. So again, the NRA would love gun purchases to be on par with abortion availability.

Really?
Whatever sources you use for news, laws, and social constructs.... Turn It Off.
You just don't get it. Sadly it is unlikely you ever will.

(4,187 posts)we should all have the right to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater?
Why is it that the 2nd amendment is the only right that can't have any restrictions whatsoever placed on it?

(688 posts)Likewise, I have the right to own an AR-15 as long as I don't endanger anyone with it other than in self-defense or in the defense of an innocent life.

No restrictions whatsoever? Really?
So there are gun shops where without filling out any paperwork I can buy a machine gun, hand grenade, antitank missile, surface to air missile, etc., just by maxing out my credit card?
Wow. I have been going to the wrong gun stores.
What's that? I can't do that?
Hm. It appears there are some restrictions placed on the 2nd Amendment, are there not?

... if there actually is a fire. Or if you're in a play and that's your line. And then only if the audience knows there isn't really a fire.
What makes you think there are no restrictions on the Second Amendment? There are quite a few. A little summer reading ...

When you're done with that, you can look up your state's regs.
