American politics and the UK voting narrowly to leave the EU in the next few years seem to be pretty unrelated but some news sources seem to be trying to tie the two together. Seriously, why are some people claiming that Trump "won" on this issue? It seems to me, besides some people in the UK being motivated by xenophobia, and Trump being the personification of xenophobia, the two things have nothing to do with each other. Also, why are some claiming that this was done in some kind of revenge against Obama? What the fuck does that even mean? Why would the UK want revenge against Obama? Why does anyone think that American politics is heavily influencing the British to do anything? Also why are people saying that the Brexit vote winning is proof that the polls are wrong when it comes to Trump Vs. Clinton? Again, what does this have to do with Trump? Also, weren't the polls mostly showing a tie and didn't it end up being a very, very close race? Weren't the polls pretty accurate? In addition, what does Trump mean when he says that the United States will be the next to leave? Next to leave what? The EU? Is he aware that we aren't an EU member?
My head is spinning from trying to read the news today. Can someone either A. Explain why this has anything to do with Trump or Obama or B. Reassure me that I accidentally wondered into Republicanville and that severe confusion is just a symptom of being around conservatives for too long?

(82,383 posts)The Brexit is not exciting enough so it must be drummed up that it is going to have great effects so people will talk about it and watch the news. Had there happened to be something bigger happened the M$M would not have noticed.
They want to make a horse race out of the election. They will use everything that happens between now and November.

(2,262 posts)and he said he was opposed to Brexit because of future trade deals. He said if Britain withdraws from the EU, the USA would work with the remaining EU members on a trade deal and put Britain off until later. I think some Brits took that as a threat, especially since so many there were against the trade deal they are working on now.
