I don't like that what happened in Orlando has already faded into being "the past"

It's the damn speed of the world we live in. Its attenuated our attention spans. It's the never ending shoveling of "new" onto our plates by the media which rushes from one thing to the next. It's our connectedness or over connectedness, depending how one views it. Things can be both bad and good. Or at least appear that way. That's how I see the "connected" issue.

It's information overload. It's so much more.

It troubles me greatly that I am susceptible to all this. It trouble me greatly that the enormous tragedy of Orlando is slipping into the past.

I want the loss of those lives so tragically to mean more than a brief moment of national horror.

11. Gun-advocates at DU were quick to assure us that nothing would come of it

Thanks to the dutiful efforts of the NRA toadies in Congress and elsewhere, this horrific tragedy has been consigned to the scrap heap with no more than a blip on the legislative agenda. Of course, even before the smoke had cleared, gun-advocates had already leaped into the fray to remind us how important guns are and how there's no possible way to enact any sort of policy that might actually make it more difficult to obtain semiautomatic weapons and kill or would 100 people in one go.

Why, we're hearing even today that rifles are super-safe and couldn't possibly be part of the problem. How silly to imagine otherwise, in fact!


For those with any basic sense of human compassion or even a dim awareness of the hatred and persecution dumped on the LGBT community, Orlando most certainly hasn't "faded into the past." Unfortunately, once the blood is washed from the scene and the victims laid to rest, the media doesn't give a shit and goes back to biding its time until the next ratings-friendly killing spree.

They probably won't have to wait long for the next one, alas, because Congress certainly hasn't done (and won't likely do) anything to prevent it.

12. The Pulse shooting itself eclipsed another Orlando gun tragedy

The previous night, a few blocks away, someone assassinated a young singer named Christina Grimmie as she signed autographs in a small venue near downtown. So Orlando was already shaken by an act of insane gun violence, when an even more (?) insane one blasted it out of the public consciousness.

Still no explanation for that one, either. " Another angry, obsessed man with a gun.

these days. Orlando is not a particularly violent or dangerous town, or at least it doesn't normally feel like one.

Colonial Plaza, where Christina Grimmie was shot, is an old movie theater venue once know for its comfy "rocking chair" velvet-covered seats. Now it's where the small groups and performers come to play. We've gone to see the Cowboy Junkies, Ani DeFranco and Paula Poundstone there.

Pulse is just around the corner a couple of street away.

We're in danger of becoming numb.

16. Depends. So many horrific events happen and we're so tapped in

not just via the news but also through social media. Where something happens is a factor. Also, the events you mention fall into either the act of nature category or something closely akin.

This was the slaughter of 49 people from the same community/minority, by gun violence in an election season where mass shootings and gun control are part of an ongoing debate.
