How Donald Trump’s 1993 comments about ‘Indians’ previewed much of his 2016 campaign

REP. GEORGE MILLER (D-CALIF): Is this you, discussing Indian blood: "We're going to judge people by whether they have Indian blood whether they're qualified to run a casino or not?"

TRUMP: That probably is me, absolutely. Because I'll tell you what. If you look, if you look at some of the reservations that you've approved, that you, sir, in your great wisdom have approved, I will tell you right now -- they don't look like Indians to me. And they don't look like the Indians ... Now, maybe we say politically correct or not politically correct, they don't look like Indians to me, and they don't look like Indians to Indians.

And a lot of people are laughing at it. And you're telling me how tough it is and how rough it is to get approved. Well, you go up to Connecticut and you look. Now, they don't look like Indians to me, sir.

MILLER: Thank God that's not the test of whether or not people have rights in this country or not -- whether or not they pass your "look" test.

TRUMP: Depends whether or not. ... Yeah. Depends whether or not you're approving it, sir.

"...they don't look like Indians to me, and they don't look like Indians to Indians."

Where, oh where to start?!

Mr. Trump, Indians are people from the country now known as India. It's in the Asian subcontinent on the other side of the world from Connecticut and Atlantic City.

The people you're talking about are Native Americans. They are the descendants of the people who were here long before your immigrant forebears arrived in the United States.

What does an "Indian" look like to Mr. Trump? In the 20th century, when the quoted interview took place, did he think that the tribal members would show up wearing headdresses and warpaint and loincloths while riding horses bareback and carrying their bows and arrows? Does Mr. Trump get his history from old spaghetti westerns?

One of the glories of being an American is that we're all supposed to be equal in the eyes of the law and the government. (I know, I know. I wrote "supposed to.&quot The people he was talking about were involved in serious business with the government. Is he surprised that modern day Native Americans dress and act like businessmen? In the crucible of our country, does he think that people haven't intermingled and married and had children of mixed heritages? After all, his father was German and his mother was from Scotland so he himself is a "mixed breed."

But in Donald Trump's mind, perhaps Native Americans should look like Tonto, Dutchmen should wear wooden shoes, Africans should be slaves, Germans should wear lederhosen and Scandinavians should wear helmets with horns on them. He's such an ass.

Donald Trump's ignorance is on display all the time. How anyone can listen to his bigotry and stupidity and support him baffles me.

Donald Trump is an idiot.
