VATICAN CITY (AP) The Vatican insisted after a high level meeting Tuesday that American nuns must faithfully promote age-old church teachings, after the women were accused by Rome of flouting core doctrine and taking an overly liberal "feminist" bent.
Sister Pat Farrell and Sister Janet Mock, respectively president and executive director of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) met with the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal William Levada and the American bishop tasked by the Vatican to overhaul the group which represents about 80 percent of American sisters.
Farrell and Mock came to Rome to present their concerns about the Vatican's April decision to reform the LCWR from the ground up. Levada's office had determined that the LCWR had strayed too far from church doctrine and was imposing certain "radical feminist themes" that were incompatible with Catholicism. ...............(more)

(552 posts)The Nuns are probably one of the few parts of the Church that the people still have respect and empathy for...so let's drag them down the abortion/gay hating road to oblivion with us!--Catholic Bishops

(21,977 posts)Despite Vatican II, the RCC is still stuck in the 12th Century.
Of course, if the Church and the Rethuglicans have their way, we'll go back to the 12th Century, complete with lords and ladies, vassals and serfs.

(14,061 posts)I knew when Ratzinger became Pope that Vatican II would be rolled back into nonexistence. First it was tampering with the Mass until it is now unrecognizable. Now, the changes are even more insidious and damaging.
The Church is committing slow suicide.

(21,977 posts)With Hitler-Youth-Ratzinger, Vatican II has been relegated to the dustbin of history. And that is a shame, because it will mean the death, albeit slow, of the Church. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing I leave to others to decide.
You can't fight City Hall, they say, and you can't fight history. Progress, sooner or later, will happen. The Church can embrace it or be crushed to dust by it.

(14,061 posts)I don't think it's hyperbole to say that nuns are actually doing the work on Earth that Christ commanded, and that they are closer to actually living the Gospels and the true tenets of the Catholic Church than any fat-assed, ermine-clad bureaucrat currently vegitating at the Vatican.
The nuns just need to split from the Church. A schism, if you will. This is nothing more than an increasingly irrelevant Church throwing around its increasingly irrelevant weight to put these "uppity women" in their place. Forget the bullshit about upholding Church teachings -- I don't think these men would know authentic Church teaching if it smacked them in the face.
And they wonder why people are leaving in droves, and why they're finding it harder to find an audience. Pretty soon all that will be left of the Church will be the aforesaid fat-assed, ermine-clad bureaucrats -- defiinitely not what Christ intended. Meanwhile, there is a lot of work to be done in terms of feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and working toward social justice, so let the nuns continue their work free from Vatican meddling.
I have known many women religious in my life, as well as many priests. I'll take the religious any day of the week.

(21,977 posts)The women get it. The men simply want to preserve their power.
The women just need to slap some sense into the men, one way or another. And I'm a man--who has had sense slapped into him on more than one occasion.

(296 posts)I've a friend who's Catholic, who hates everything the church teaches & stands for, yet refuses to leave because, and I quote, "it's MY church". No honey, it isn't now and never was "your" church, because you are female, you're liberal, you're a sentient being who thinks for herself. And as long as your money's in the plate and your ass is in the pew, you're aiding and abetting everything you claim to despise.
Seriously, why continue to beat your head against the 12th-century wall???
