Usually the presidential nominee stands with his running mate for some time on the stage to show their unity, but Trump always ditches Pence as fast as if he were an aging wife.

He can't keep his mouth shut, though, so probably we'll know at some point.

I really don't think so. Oh, there may be craving for power there that has nothing to do with his god, but my guess is he interpreted the possible wreck of his political career plus the offer from Trump to have him run domestic and foreign policy, while he took care of "branding," as the "call" he was waiting for.

"Impress him with his lackey-ness?" Oh, so agree! Behind all that on-stage, and no doubt off-stage, humility have to be a great deal of calculation and ambition, in the service of god of course. But most extremely religious people naturally respond to authoritarian leaders (god being the ultimate authority figure) and are already very practiced in displays of humility. Pence has to be very aware of Trump's mental debility and is no doubt trying to become an expert on how to use it manipulate him. When he's allowed near the great man, of course.
