President Obama: Republicans, Romney Offering The Same Okey-Doke

PHILADELPHIA -- Standing before a hulking statue of Benjamin Franklin, President Barack Obama accused his Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney of offering the same economic proposals as his Congressional counterparts did during the George W. Bush administration.

“It will be the same stuff, the same okey-doke, but you know what they do have, is they’ll have 500 billion dollars-worth of negative ads,” Obama warned the crowd of 500 in a cavernous foyer at the Franklin Institute here.

“We had baked into the cake structural deficits that were made even worse by a financial crisis,” he said. “And so for these folks to suddenly get religion?” he continued, accusing Republicans of, as he had at earlier campaign events in Baltimore, “running up the tab and trying to pass off the bill to me.”

Touting what he said was his own strength on fiscal issues (while also linking himself to the leader who had that surplus), Obama noted, “the two presidents with the least growth in government spending in the modern era happened to be two Democrats named Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.”

“The choices in this election could not be starker,” President Obama said. “Back in 2008, I had some strong disagreements with John McCain, but there were certain baselines that we both agreed on. We both agreed on things like immigration reform. We agreed on the existence of climate change. We agreed on the need to control campaign finance spending. This time out, across the board, there is just a fundamental disagreement, a difference of vision in terms of where we want to go.”

“Governor Romney’s vision is pretty much in sync with the vision of the House Republican Party right now, and it can be described basically with two ideas,” said President Obama. “One is that we need to slash taxes even more, particularly for the wealthiest, most successful among us. And two, we need to eliminate any kind of regulations, whether consumer or worker regulations or environmental regulations, that in any way impede the free market from operating however it will.”

“The vision that I’m presenting in this campaign is consistent with what we talked about in 2008,” he said. “And that says, government can’t solve every one of our problems and it shouldn’t try, that there are some government programs that don’t work and should be ended, and there are some things that have to be done at a local level, but there are also some things that we have to do together.”

"What we have been able to do over the last 3-1/2 years, after a decade in which we had been moving in the wrong direction, is to begin to point towards a trajectory where here in this country, everybody is getting a fair shot," he told supporters.

“I love it when these guys talk about debt and deficits. I inherited a trillion dollar deficit … We signed two trillion dollars in spending cuts into law. Spending under my administration has grown more slowly than under any president in 60 years … They baked all this stuff into the cake with those tax cuts … and the war.

"The good news is, I think the American people agree with us," Obama told diners at a fundraiser at the Franklin Institute here. "They’re not following ... the ups and downs, the ins and outs of this campaign. But they do have a sense of what’s true. They have pretty good instincts about what works and they’re not persuaded that an economy built on the notion that everybody here is on their own is somehow going to result in a stronger, more prosperous America. So our job is to just make sure that we get that message out."

This is a gross exaggeration done to promote a scare effect in those who hear it. They just want to extend the tax cuts that are already in place, not cut them more. They do not want to eliminate all regulations either. This kind of dishonesty pisses me off and is above Obama so why does he resort to it? He doesn't have to. Dude is killing me with crap like this.

Under such a plan, individuals currently with the highest individual tax rate -- 35 percent -- would pay a 28 percent rate instead. No surprise here, but the tax cuts in Paul Ryan’s 2013 budget plan would result in huge benefits for high-income people and very modest—or no— benefits for low income working households, according to a new analysis by the Tax Policy Center.

TPC looked only at the tax reductions in Ryan’s plan, which also included offsetting–but unidentified–cuts in tax credits, exclusions, and deductions. TPC found that in 2015, relative to today’s tax system, those making $1 million or more would enjoy an average tax cut of $265,000 and see their after-tax income increase by 12.5 percent. By contrast, half of those making between $20,000 and $30,000 would get no tax cut at all. On average, people in that income group would get a tax reduction of $129. Ryan would raise their after-tax income by 0.5 percent.

Nearly all middle-income households (those making between $50,000 and $75,000) would see their taxes fall, by an average of roughly $1,000. Ryan would increase their after-tax income by about 2 percent.

Ryan would extend all of the 2001/2003 tax cuts, and then consolidate individual rates to just two—10 and 25 percent. In addition, he’d repeal the Alternative Minimum Tax, reduce the corporate rate from 35 percent to 25 percent, and kill the tax provisions of the 2010 health reform law.

CNN Money:

Wealthy would cash in under Romney tax plan

According to a new analysis from the Tax Policy Center, wealthy Americans would see their taxes fall precipitously under Mitt Romney's new plan -- which scraps the Alternative Minimum Tax and cuts marginal tax rates by 20%.

Assuming the Bush tax cuts are extended, the Romney plan would give the top 1% of earners an average tax cut of $150,000, a 7.8% reduction in their average federal tax rate, according to the Tax Policy Center.
