Stephen Baldwin Says Gays Should Start Their Own Church If They Want To Marry

While attending the Republican National Convention this week, actor Stephen Baldwin offered up some eyebrow-raising views on same-sex marriage.

The 50-year-old “Usual Suspects” star told Katie Couric in a July 19 Yahoo! News interview that his stance on marriage equality was a bit of a “Jedi mind trick.” Same-sex couples should be allowed to marry, he said, if they started their own churches and institutions that give them that right.

“I think anybody should be free to do whatever they want, but they shouldn’t ask other people to compromise what they believe in order to do so,” he said. “I don’t think there should be anything wrong with that at all.”

When Couric pressed him further, Baldwin noted that some of his “best friends in the world are gay folks,” before attempting a clarification that somehow wound up making his stance more convoluted than it had been previously.

“If they believe that they should have the right to have that kind of a union, and they believe that they should have the rights that come along with that,” he said, “they shouldn’t ask, for instance, the Catholic church to change its doctrine to accommodate that.”

Interesting idea tho Everyone get married in their own church by inventing their own church

That way MY GOD, which is the way born aginners describe god fits nicely with MY CHURCH

and MY SATAN and MY JESUS

My God would also meet the approval of capitalists who believe all things and relationships between things are private property or relations between individual private property

Worship is then part of a system of exchange just like capitalism

See everyone happy LOL

A god raping a virgin mortal who gives birth to a super human, who is condemned by his bastardy to perform tasks assigned to him for Dad's ammusment and then is rewarded with ascendency to heaven

Sure Catholic public servants are asked, nay required, to follow the laws of their city, state, or Federal govt.... but the Church itself has never been expected to start marrying gays.

Instead of requiring gays to "start their own church" maybe people like Baldwin should stop turning the public square into one.

I think the Caltholic has been asked to change its doctrines, as to both gays and women.

So have Muslims.

No huge or very powerful movements have been involved, but they have been asked.

And, IMO, they both should be asked to change, and asked often, until they do change.

Meanwhile, I'm guessing Stephen Baldwin is making money out of being a converted celebrity and saying bigoted things.

I am feeling a deeply held religious belief that it's okay to smack him upside the head for being a dipshit. I'm sure I can convince a few people to join my new religion and then we can all go smack him upside the head.

not a religious one. You have to get a certificate of marriage from a county clerk. Then anyone can administer the ceremony, if a ceremony is desired, and pronounce marriage. That is the legal definition. That is what insurance companies and inheritance court procedures recognize.

Gay couples. No one who is a pastor has to do that, just like they aren't required to marry hetero couples if they believe they shouldn't marry.

For justices of the peace, it's a different matter. They hold a publuc, government job.

Many gays and lesbians have been in their churches from the cradle. Why should we leave because you're uncomfortable? We've been working this field for 40 years, praying, persuading, studying, proclaiming. We've endured ostracism, hostility, death threats, beatings, official condemnation, and worse.

Now, slowly, there's grudging acceptance and still a plurality holding out against inclusion. But the numbers are dwindling, and even you have figured out where things are heading. You don't like it? Why don't you start your own church? You're in the process of losing this battle. We haven't fought for 40 years or more to get inside the church door and serve as who we are just to let some empty-headed bigot tell us to stop. Your attitude is no longer relevant, Mr. Baldwin.
