A new study in the journal JAMA Pediatrics is making waves this week with the news that there's been a sharp uptick in emergency-room visits and poison-control calls for marijuana poisoning among children in Colorado.
The study found that the number of marijuana-related hospital visits for children under the age of 10 more than doubled since the opening of Colorado's recreational marijuana market, from seven in 2013 to 16 visits in 2015. Marijuana-related poison control calls for young kids also rose sharply over that period, from 25 to 47.
Opponents of marijuana legalization were quick to jump on the findings.

(18,402 posts)Crayons are not poisonous.
From Crayola:
We have ensured that our products are safe since 1903, when we first began offering crayons. All Crayola and Silly Putty products have been evaluated by an independent toxicologist and found to contain no known toxic substances in sufficient quantities to be harmful to the human body, even if ingested or inhaled.
And from the Illinois Poison Control center:
Toxicity Level: Minimally toxic
Toxicity: Crayons are only expected to cause a mild laxative effect if ingested.
Pick another analogy, please.

The Environmental Working Group reported that they found asbestos in four brands of children's crayons. Does this news posit a significant health danger?
In mid-2015, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Action Fund's "Asbestos Nation" campaign announced that they had found "deadly asbestos fibers" in four brands of children's crayons. EWG reported that they purchased 28 brands of crayons at two national chains (Party City and Dollar Tree) between February and May of 2015 and sent them to an independent company (Scientific Analytical Institute) to test them for asbestos using transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
According to EWG's report, asbestos was "detected and confirmed" in four brands of crayons, all of them manufactured in China: Amscan Crayons, Disney Mickey Mouse Clubhouse 10 Jumbo Crayons, Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Crayons, and Saban's Power Rangers Super Megaforce 10 Jumbo Crayons.

(2,955 posts)Wake me up if somebody ever actually dies from 'marijuana poisoning'. All marijuana poisoning means is that the kid probably got into edibles, had too many and then got pretty messed up for a while. I disagree with the very wording of 'marijuana poisoning'. Usually poisoning is something that can kill people or have long term effects.
