Man’s ‘unusual fixation’ with Lebanese neighbors led to killing, Tulsa police say

From the Washington Post. Link at bottom. Outrage right here.

Khalid Jabara was worried.

Last year, his mother had been jogging through the family’s quiet Tulsa neighborhood when she was nearly killed in a vicious hit-and-run. Police quickly arrested Vernon Majors, who, according to a police report, confessed to the crime and even offered a motive, calling the Jabaras “filthy Lebanese.”

On May 25 of this year, however, Majors bonded out of jail.

That’s when he returned home — right next to the Jabaras.

On Friday, Khalid learned that his next-door neighbor, the man accused of harassing his family and attacking his mother, was now armed.

“Khalid called the police stating this man had a gun and that he was scared for what might happen,” his sister, Victoria Jabara Williams, wrote on Facebook. “The police came and told him there was nothing to be done.”

Minutes later, Khalid was talking on the phone with his mother when he stepped outside to get the mail.

Majors was waiting for him, police say.

The 61-year-old opened fire, fatally wounding the 37-year-old Khalid, according to police.

After a bizarre standoff involving bare feet and a six-pack of beer, Majors was arrested. He will be formally charged with first-degree murder as soon as he is released from a hospital later this week, police said in a news release.

If the roles were reversed, however, it would be...and boiler plate for Trump speechifying.

Where he could get a gun while out on bail for charges of harming his next door neighbor.

But keeping it was illegal. After running over Khalid's mother:

Majors was prohibited from going near Jabara or her home or possessing firearms for the next five years.

Don't know if "prohibited" includes "police confiscating any firearms you already have".

Also, the DA tried to keep him in jail. Stupid judge.

Police charged Majors with felony assault. Initially, he was held in custody without bond. But three months ago, against the district attorney's wishes, a judge allowed his release until his trial in March 2017.

At least it was illegal. Not that it helped in this case - they might have thought of confiscating where it's the next door neighbor and he would be living right there. Judge wasn't thinking enough of that! A factor for keeping him in.

Apparently even convicted felons don't get their houses searched (for example by their parole officers). His friend owned a .22 handgun, and the friend said that he knew he could be arrested for it.

So apparently if you're caught with it, you're sent back to jail. But nothing is done to make sure you (a convicted felon) don't have one.

To me, if the judge issues an order prohibiting you for having firearms for the next five years (especially in connection with a violent crime like hit-and-run), the judge should also issue a search warrant to make sure you don't have one already.

Or at least in the case where the person with the restraining order, victim of the very crime, lives in the same house or next door.

In domestic cases, too. There will be an order like that and it should be enforced better than just wait until the person violates it.

Arabs have integrated in Oklahoma for decades. Half the steak houses in the state serve tabouli. Because of the oil industry and the foremost school of petroleum geology in the nation we always had Arab students mixed in when we were growing up in Tulsa. Some were cool and some were jerks, just like regular people. Majors has to be mental.

Tulsa's newspapers are (and almost always been) completely "conservative." I'm sure Trump's spewage is making its mark.

This could really be a Thanks Trump story. The hate and fear being generated by his campaign and supporters has to lead to more disgusting stories like this.
