Trump has been running a very dark campaign. It just went pitch black.
His two new hires, Steve Bannon, CEO of the hate-filled disease called the Breitbart blog, and Kellyanne Conway, Republican pollster, campaign operative and fringe nut, are two of the "worst people in the world" (as Keith Olbermann would say).
First, it's necessary to understand that Donald Trump is an ignorant, intolerant, bigoted, narcissistic bully with zero empathy for human beings, and who seems to be incapable of curiosity, reading, or learning. He probably thinks he's running for Emperor of the World.
And now he's hired two people who want to support, encourage and further his ignorance, delusions, and extremely ugly fantasies.
In truth, these two are attempting to use Trump as a tool, not just for destroying Hillary, but for helping them demolish the Republican establishment which they hate. Add them to Trump's reckless disregard for who and what he destroys, and you've got a trio of malevolent anarchists who desire absolute, total power.
Put another way, they really don't care if they end up destroying (a partially civilized) America. Given their ambitions, they just don't give a rat's ass if their activities could lead to a "Mad Max" Apocalypse.
Destroying Hillary is number one on their agenda. ("She's mentally unfit." "She's physically incapable." "She murdered Vince Foster." "She's a crook." "Benghazi," "Emails," and so on ...)
And destroying the Republican hierarchy runs a close second to the destruction of Hillary.
Like it or not, we need at least two political parties to maintain some semblance of balance and to prevent extremism in any direction. Hopefully, the outcome of this election will be that Trump is crushed in a landslide and the Republicans will at last give up their despicable "Southern Strategy." But I'm not holding my breath for that to happen.
The bottom line here is that if/when/after Hillary wins the presidency, these lying scum will still be around, peddling hatred, divisiveness and mountains of diseased lies. And Trump will continue to shriek, for years to come, how this was "a stolen election," and poisoning the waters of American politics.
Most Democrats understand this even without knowing the details. It's imperative that each of us do everything possible (including trying to convert family members, friends, etc. who are thinking of voting for Trump) to stop the creeping horror of the current Republican campaign.
Nonetheless, even when these people lose, (hopefully in a landslide), the venom they've sown will still be embedded in the roots of American politics and won't be going away anytime in the foreseeable future.

(24,396 posts)Sure, we need two political parties in this country, but we need two basically centrist parties: one that leans 20% to the right, and one that leans 50% to the left. That would be true balance, as history tells us that progressive ideas - not conservative ideas - are what move humanity forward.
We have more chance of a slightly right-leaning party arising out of the ashes of the R Party than we have of the Rs moving significantly back toward the center.

and that we really need some form of (sane) conservative party to replace them.
First things first. Trump, and the current GOP must be crushed this year in an electoral landslide.

(10,857 posts)... but right now I feel like we've finally collected the crazies, the stupids, and the sociopaths into one biohazard bag and we have a two-to-six year window in which we can actually get something done before they try to infiltrate our side.
It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we're not going to have a lot of time to get it done. So I'm more than happy to see a (very temporary) one-party domination in our favor, so that we can get things pointed in the right direction.
We already do the worrying for the crazies, the stupids, and the sociopaths, keep them relatively safe and comfortable in spite of their own aims, and it will take a while for that to change. And let's not forget their amazing ability to grow two new heads whenever one is cut off. The Republican Party may die, but their core beliefs of racism, greed, and selfishness will instantly manifest itself in another dark creation.

So I agree with you on burying them long enough for us to get some useful things done.
