'We Only Tip Citizens'

Couple Stiffs Waitress: 'We Only Tip Citizens' (Photo and Video below)

An unidentified couple wrote: "We only tip citizens" on a receipt, which was apparently directed towards their waitress, Sadie Elledge, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, on Aug. 15.

Sadie's grandfather, John Elledge, posted a picture of the receipt (and its insulting message) on Facebook on Aug. 16, and it went viral.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, John recalled how he took it hard:

“[Sadie] was calm and collected. I was more upset.
One of my other granddaughters works at my firm as a secretary. She told me and I flew off the handle ...

Sadie told WHSV reporter Isabel Rosales during a Facebook Live interview that she [Sadie] was born in the U.S., and had Mexican and Honduran heritage.

The waitress recalled that the couple who stiffed her would "stare at me, nod their head, never really make eye contact."

When asked about the receipt, Sadie said:
"I just thought it was really disrespectful, to be honest with everybody. You should treat everybody the same. Just because you can tell that I'm Hispanic does not mean anything bad, like treat me the same way you would want to be treated."

Sadie had this message for the couple:

“Everybody needs to be more respectful and that it doesn't really matter if I'm Hispanic, or American, whatever you want to call it. I'm still a person, you should still treat me with respect and anybody else.
I don't know if you have gone anywhere else and left that same message anywhere. But I just think you could have been nicer about it, and if there was an issue, you could have told my manager.”

it's essentially fraud to accept service from a server that you have no intention to tip under any circumstances. stiffing waitstaff due to horrendous service may be justified, but that's clearly not the case here. even then, you sit down and accept service in good faith, intending to tip, and later withholding a tip only because the service was horrendous.

to sit down and accept service from a server knowing full well you will not tip is basically fraud. it would be more honest to at least ask for a different server, one they felt ok tipping. that would certainly also be bad, but the cowardly bigots don't even have that level of decency, freeing up the alleged non-citizen to serve a table that doesn't have a problem tipping.

Some people might remember them and include a "bonus" with their food.
It is to Sadie's credit that this probably would not occur to her.

SOME white people seem to think that their ancestors fought and won in the Mexican American War and thus EARNED the land. They really believe all of the Mexicans were driven over the border and any you see should go back where they came from because they're not welcome here. John Wayne died at the Alamo for America!

That's not the history AT ALL.

In reality the Mexicans voted for statehood in California back in 1849 12 years before the Civil War on the promise of freedom from the caste system of aristocrats and peasants. They were told they would become equals as United States Citizens.

In other words, they were lied to.

which makes "go back where you belong" an absurd sentiment. In my travels years ago I had dinner with some people in New Mexico. The hosts (white) had lived there for a generation. A wife and her sister also attending had spanish heritage traceable back 350 years. Another person there was predominantly Hopi - their land back to prehistory. Needless to say, were there a "go back to where you belong" type discussion, the logical thrust would have been quite different.

Its hard to say anti-immigrant sentiments aren't really about rights of conquest or inherent white supremacy, neither of which I have any sympathy for.

I've lived in Albuquerque for about 15 years and have met a lot of Hispanics who trace their ancestry here back to before the Americans came.

All the way back to the 1500's when Spain destroyed the native cultures and colonized Mexico?

Which was after the "americans" came.

Or are you referring to someone with Aztec ancestry?
