Louisiana Flooding Is Worst Disaster Since Sandy, But People Aren’t Talking About It

USA TODAY NETWORK Ashley May and Mary Bowerman, USA TODAY Network

At least 13 people are dead and 40,000 homes are damaged because of flooding in Louisiana – and the rest of the world isn’t really talking about it.

Since rain hit the state's southern region last week, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have collectively issued no formal acknowledgements of the disaster, aside from a tweet.

As of Thursday morning, the search term “Louisiana” wasn't easy to find on Google Trends,' sharing a spot at 31 beside news of President Obama's vacation plans.

Obama has yet to visit Louisiana, but members of his cabinet are on the ground. One of the state's largest newspapers recently published an editorial asking him to leave his vacation at Martha's Vineyard and come help Americans struggling in the southern state.

For comparison, Obama visited New Jersey two days after Hurricane Sandy touched down there. The Red Cross is calling the flooding in Louisiana the worst natural disaster since the superstorm.

There is zero evidence to support than concern. There is however, ample evidence that it's being handled in an efficient, effective and professional manner.

Any Presidential trip requires lots of local police support for security and planning. Those resources are better left for rescuing people and relocating evacuees.

It's a vast drain on emergency responders for a mere photo op.

Other than some footage of heroic rescues, there isn't much to see, except mud and ruin after the waters recede. The aftermath will be more of the same following Katrina - lives permanently altered, and little and big government fighting over how to rebuild the civil infrastructure to lessen the impact of future events. I'll be interested to see how the projects FEMA helped fund withstood the deluge, since I participated in the last recovery a small bit.

It has been the lead or 2nd story every evening on the 3 major networks. I know because I have been watching
The Governor of LA has ASKED POTUS to please stay away because it might negatively impact rescue efforts. He has complimented FEMA's work. The last thing the poor people in LA is politicians doing meaningless photo ops. This whole story is just shit-stirring.

The Louisiana flooding while tragic has had 13 deaths associated with it. Sandy over 280 and Katrina over 1800 with over 135 souls still listed as "missing". It is not Obama's job to fly to every mass casualty incident-that is for first responders and Fema. This-like it or not is just a climate change preview.
