GovGuam must pay $466K in refund case
U.S. District Court Judge Consuelo B. Marshall on Thursday granted a recent motion for award of $466,555 in attorneys fees and costs for lawyers who represented taxpayers in a federal lawsuit against the government of Guam.
The plaintiffs were represented by the Law Offices of Ignacio Cruz Aguigui and Girard Gibbs LLP.
The taxpayers who brought the suit against the government, Rea Mializa Paeste, Jeffrey Paeste, Sharon Zapanta and Glenn Zapanta, won their case in District Court of Guam in 2013. When GovGuam appealed that decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the appeal court upheld the District Courts decision.
In June, the U.S. Supreme Court decided not to entertain the Calvo administrations petition challenging the lower courts order to pay error-free tax refunds within six months of filing or filing deadline.
