When they move fast it causes less damage due to flooding and high tides. Butt a slow moving storm just spends more time dumping massive amounts of rain and the screwing up the tides and surges. (Causing more flooding.)
I recently left Palm Beach County to go back to Ohio. This would have really had me on pins and needles in SoFlo. It looks like it will most likely stay off the east coast of Florida. But this stuff can make changes and shift quickly.

(4,742 posts)The good news is that area can withstand a LOT of rain. I remember one time a smaller hurricane dumped nearly 19 inches of rain at my house in Boca Raton. It never really flooded except up in Wellington where the polo fields are located.
Hope your son stays safe. One thing that becomes dangerous is the hurricane bands can produce tornadoes which I never realized until I moved to Florida back in 2008.
