Ammon Bundy Expected to Take the Stand - #BundyTeaParty

By Colin Miner (Patch Staff)
October 3, 2016 11:06 am ET

Ammon Bundy, the leader of the 41-day armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, could take the stand in his own defense as early as Monday ...

Bundy - who has denied being the leader of the occupation, having said "it was more of a combined effort" - is expected after defense lawyers finish with Jeffrey Rose, the assistant district manager for the Bureau of Land Management ...

Last week, Bundy's lawyer, Marcus Mumford, had said he planned to play a tape of a two-hour conversation among Bundy, Ward, and Ryan Payne.

Judge Anna Brown told him to pick excerpts.

I'd bet the prosecutors have whole binders packed with questions for Ammon. Their closing statement will be replete with "You heard Ammon Bundy himself say . . ." statements. The only thing I can surmise is that Mumford is laying the groundwork for an incompetent representation appeal.

The Bundys are using the standard "illegitimate government" sovereign citizen defense - they believe the government has no authority over anything.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward was once again called to the witness stand .. only this time by the defense ...

Ammon Bundy wrote he was “disgusted” by Ward’s decision to call in extra law enforcement before the occupation.

But on social media, Ammon Bundy told the public the opposite, and after that, Ward said, he no longer believed Ammon Bundy was just uninformed. He believed Ammon Bundy was not telling the truth.

In an audio clip played to the jury of a conversation between Ammon Bundy and Sheriff Ward, they discussed federal abuse of power by burning lands, starting large wildfires and not facing prosecution ...

... Sheriff Ward, who previously testified he wanted a peaceful ending to the standoff, was called to the witness stand once again Monday, this time by the defense.

Bundy’s attorney Marcus Mumford played audio clips from a meeting on November 19, during which Bundy called on the sheriff to stand with the Hammonds or “stand with the system that abused them.”

Full coverage: Malheur National Wildlife Refuge standoff
“Find out what is really going on, what these people are about,” Bundy advised the sheriff. “You only have a week to say, ‘I’m standing with the Hammonds or not. If you do not make a decision, you’re hurting <them> further.'”

Bundy said “tens of thousands of people” would protect the Hammonds if Sheriff Ward chose to do otherwise. “We’re not bluffing,” Bundy said in the recording ...

... "I have no choice to get the truth to the jury but to get on the stand'' even if prosecutors use his words against him, Bundy said.

Bundy, the leader of the occupation, also said he's eager to testify about the 2014 armed standoff with federal officers outside his father Cliven Bundy's ranch in Bunkerville, Nevada. Bundy, his brother and other co-defendants are facing a separate federal prosecution in Nevada for that confrontation.

The judge asked if Bundy had talked with his lawyers about the risks of testifying about Bunkerville and the possibility that his statements could be used against him in his upcoming Nevada prosecution.

Bundy said he hadn't ...

... Pat Horlacher, of Burns, Oregon, said he drove to the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge shortly after the occupation because he wanted to see for himself if reports of a dangerous situation were true ...

Horlacher said he tried to meet Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward, but he had no luck getting through heavy security. He said key government buildings were protected by armed police and federal agents.

“The only thing I could compare it to was a scene out of Red Dawn,” said Horlacher, referencing the 1984 movie in which Soviet soldiers invade a small Colorado town ...

... Mumford asked Ward if Bundy, in the video, was encouraging him to research the Hammond case.

"No, sir, he was asking me to interfere with a lawful court order,'' Ward responded, referring to a federal judge's re-sentencing of the Hammonds and ordering that they return to federal prison ...

Mumford pointed out to Ward that he had previously testified that he was always comfortable talking to Bundy.

"Being comfortable talking to someone doesn't make them honest, sir,'' Ward responded ...
