Mainly, America is about freedom, in my opinion.

We have the freedom to move anywhere we want in the United States of America.

"American" is an idea to immigrants that might be different from you and I.

Although there are those that would tear down the idea of "America" and make us a Third World country, we continue to cling to the idea that "America" is special in some way like no other country on earth.

So all the above are American's. (pisses some Canadians off. But actually truthful.) This it the "United States" of "America".

I think the main difference is really just more awareness in daily life of other places in the world because of media and the internet. Same people just more info and polarization brought main stream.
