A friend on FB posted an article about Trump is killing off Ivanka's brand with women. A friend of hers went off about Hillary Clinton (of course), saying he buys all of Trump's stuff. I asked which stuff, the things he had made in China or the gear that got made in Mexico. This is his reply: (It's copied verbatim, so all mistakes are his.)
all the big companies are forced to make there products in the cheaper labor markets because of the rules the democrats have in stalled read you might learn

(11,746 posts)These people are economic illiterates. Direct them to David Riccardo and comparative advantage.
Do you know why it's called the dismal science? It's called the dismal science because of the inevitability of subsistence wages. But we have dealt with that successfully. If they want a solution then they have to give up toiletries stupid laissez-faire mentality.

When all they ever get their news from is Faux, Hannity and Limbaugh.

(7,299 posts)and American corporations. It has to be the fault of taxes and regulations. That way, it's the government's fault. Cheap Third world wages will never come out of a wingnut's mouth. But, if it's taxes and regulations, why would Trump import low payed foreign visa workers to staff his Florida resorts instead if hiring Americans if the same taxes and regulations apply ? These Wingnuts make my head hurt.

(7,299 posts)corporations. Your mindset is gauged to a world we used to live in. This is a global economy now. These non-college educated Trump supporters had two decades to increase their educational skills in order to compete in the new global economy. They refused to do so. Now they blame their poor decisions on the government and believe Trump when he tells them that he can reverse the effects of the global economy. He can't. Nobody can.

(11,119 posts)Tariffs are imposed on cheaper imported widgets to raise their prices so that their prices are similar to American-made widgets .... That way, American widget producers can compete with foreign widget-makers with regard to price in the domestic market, and American workers keep their jobs producing widgets for American consumption/sales.
Now, I expect you to try to tell me what is stupid about the US NOT instituting tariffs to protect US industries in the 90s...er

(11,119 posts)This stuff maybe imported by American companies but it is not American-made. These items are made in China or India or where ever using nearly-slave labor for distribution and sales in other markets. It' s cheaper for US companies to buy this stuff over there, import it into the US and then sell it to US retailers. Tariffs would have kept the cheap imports comparably-priced to the Americans made products that were made to be sold in the US market.

(7,299 posts)that is maunfactured in America would you suggest the American consumer buy ?

(11,119 posts)It would be up to some enterprising person or group of people to find a cheap way of manufacturing I-phones other than using slave labor of China or where ever.
Barring that, I-phones would be American-made and sold in the US market and they would be very expensive! And I guarantee you that people who want an I-phone would figure out a way to afford one...

More accurately, all you have to 'allege' rather than say; as your premise and each of your supporting statements have been merely that-- allegations.

(11,119 posts)One-dimensionally you think of things. You've talked about inter-twining and global markets but the US is a dynamic and robust market within itself...
Anyway, tariffs would have evened the playing field way back when before consumers got a whiff of the cheap Walmart prices that we now have...

(7,299 posts)dwarf our population and have quickly growing middle classes like we experienced in the 50's and 60's. Asia represents the growth model for U.S. multinationals in the next 50 years. GM currently sells more cars in China than in the U.S. Your thinking is retro. There will be much stronger dynamic markets in Asia in the future as compared to the U.S. You refuse the new paradigm because it makes you uncomfortable. I understand your feelings. You believe that we can take a technological-driven shrinking world and reverse it to make the world larger. That is just not possible.

(60,351 posts)When commenting on FB, I use the same principle as I do on DU. I do a search, find the facts that back up my position and post it with a link to the source.
It doesn't have to be political, just yesterday my favorite college football team soundly defeated another school. A friend posted that the loosing team focused on books, not football. I knew my favorite team had very high GPA for NCAA athletes. I found a link giving the average GPA for the team and as a bonus the article pointed out that the players displayed their individual GPA on their helmets if above 3.0.
It helps when you have facts.
BTW: The team is Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats, 5 time National Champions Division II and currently holds the longest winning streak in any division at 22 games.
I follow Div II because these players have to think about life after football, not many make it to the NFL.
Pardon my diversion.

(5,969 posts)It's a stupid excuse for not producing in the US. The Clinton campaign countered that claim by presenting many companies that manufacture their products in the US. Whether it's shirts, ties or whatever Trump produces abroad, one can find many companies that do that domestically.
So that excuse and blaming your greed on everyting but yourself is not valid. The reason that Trump, this champion of blue collar, manufactures abroad is to maximize his profits. You have to be an idiot to believe that he gives a shit about the middle class.

Maybe something like...
Why do you take it for granite that Democrats are the escape goats? If you had any self of steam, supporting such a coal hearted person like Trump would give you a mindgrain because, for all intensive porpoises, there are many people in this cuntry to make products that are a diamond dozen. It's probably a mute point, but I hope that you will read and learn and get a new leash on life.
