but what I don't get is, don't the insurance companies send out inspectors/investigators to see for themselves the damage before settling a claim that large?

These reports focus on damage to the house, which seems to be minimal.

The resort includes a beach and a golf course, so when they say "landscaping damage", it's not cheap to rebuild a beach.

But the story assumes the insurance company just blithely writes checks and doesn't care.

and, for that big of a claim, there are probably several inspectors involved, and likely some sort of expert would be hired to verify the potential costs and, likely a high level manager/director type that needs to sign off on the claim. That said, somebody along the way in the process maybe gets a nice fat "donation" check from the Trump Foundation to add an extra 0 to the claim - an inspector making $60,000 or $80,000 a year is going to be tempted by a $10,000 or $20,000 check, or a "donation" to their child's college fund or something like that.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Donald Trump says he received a $17 million insurance payment in 2005 for hurricane damage to Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Palm Beach. But The Associated Press has found little evidence of such large-scale damage.

Two years after a series of storms, the real estate tycoon said he didn’t know how much had been spent on repairs, but acknowledged he pocketed some of the money. He transferred funds into his personal accounts, saying that under the terms of his policy ‘‘you didn’t have to reinvest it.’

‘‘If there were $17 million dollars of damage, we sure as hell would have known about that,’’ said Frank. ‘‘I would have known if there was anything in the magnitude of $100,000.’’

The Republican mayor of Palm Beach at the time — and Mar-a-Lago member — Jack McDonald, agreed: ‘‘I am unable to comprehend $17 million in reimbursable damage.’’
