Trump's Doral Stunt

Last edited Wed Oct 26, 2016, 09:47 AM - Edit history (1)

The images and footage of workers at Trump's Doral hotel/golf course tops the most despicable stunts of his in this election.

I have no way of knowing if the praise Trump directly elicited from the workers who spoke in that press appearance was genuine and not coerced, but that's the thing. There's an automatic question of coercion; a question of whether these folks working for Trump outside of his campaign feel their jobs may be at risk if they refuse to participate in his praisefest.

Ali Vitali @alivitali
"This guy better say good or I'll say: you're fired," Trump says as employee takes him up on offer to speak. He speaks glowingly of Trump.

The entire thing has a Dickensian creep to it, not to mention the cheesy, Trumpworld backdrop. Is this a presidential campaign or an infomercial?

This was about promoting Trump enterprises, shoring up his brand, hoping to insulate his family business from the toxicity of his campaign by making it look like he's all inclusive. What I see are minority workers in a subservient role being exploited by their megalomaniac boss, using his presidential campaign to generate and attract business to his personal enterprises.

...Brad makes a good point here:

promote his brand generally and his hotels especially.

Private profit over public well-being.

Rick Santorum (to choose just one), defining his 2012 run for the Republican nomination in large part as a gesture of faith, to impose a religious construct onto the public landscape.

The Republicans since Nixon have been up to no good.

...defending, promoting, or representing some industry or business interest.

Trump's shamelessly exploiting this political moment for his personal fortune, crowdfunding his sham campaign with donations from republican voters - much like he used his charity foundation for his personal aggrandizement.

many elections, too.

Shrink the government, fatten the wallets, ignore the people.

Remember his very first appearance, gliding down the escalator at one of those offenses to aesthetics he slaps his name on? At least a portion of the crowd were paid actors, who were supposed to juice the cheering and applause.

The political media good-naturedly issued a pass on that, and the die was cast for the rest of Trump's campaign. We will never know if things might have turned out differently had the media constantly asked Trump how many of the rabidly enthusiastic folks at his rallies were paid actors.

It's amazing. Even if they hate Hillary, they have to be getting annoyed that this guy is such a hack. It's embarrassing.

I attended the PGA event beginning in the late '60s. Now it is gone, thanks to Trump and his hateful emphasis. Sponsors bailed and PGA commissioner Tim Finchem took the World Golf Championship event to Mexico. It is particularly damaging to South Florida because golf is slumping nationwide and that's only exaggerated due to South Florida demographics. We really needed that annual spotlight, to keep kids involved in the sport.

Speaking of demographics, the Doral area is among the most heavily Hispanic in the Miami area. Doral itself is 80% Hispanic, compared to 65% in Dade County overall. So Trump is essentially bragging about geographic normalcy when he says 80% of his Doral employees are Hispanic.
