Patient burned when laser ignites fart

A patient passing gas during surgery ended up being burned after the laser ignited the fart, resulting in a fiery explosion, a report released Friday by the Tokyo Medical University Hospital said.

While doctors operated on the woman's cervix, she apparently farted — the laser igniting the emission. As a result, her lower body in particular was badly affected, according to the Asahi Shimbun.

The incident took place at Tokyo University Hospital in April but only this month have investigators concluded the cause.

"When the patient's intestinal gas leaked into the space of the operation (room), it ignited with the irradiation of the laser," the report states, "and the burning spread, eventually reaching the surgical drape and causing the fire."

A committee of experts charged with investigating the incident ruled that there were no other flammable materials present at the time of surgery and the equipment that was used did not malfunction, leading them to believe the woman's flatulence was the culprit.

Dealing with flatulence while the patient is under anesthesia hasn't been an issue until now.

I hope she recovers well, but I imagine recovery will be quite painful.

The average person farts 14 times a day. They do tell you to not eat after a certain time the night before surgery. Maybe this woman ate after she was supposed to.

Imagine trying to explain this to your patient!

This brings back a memory of my youth and how we all had a huge laugh when our dubious friend would not believe farts were flammable, so he tried lighting one for himself while sitting. He was so surprised sitting there on the hut floor when it lit off, he jumped and it appeared he took off backwards like a rocket. This was in the jungle and the hut had no chairs, and well, it was a good thing were already all on the floor. It took a while before we could all stop rolling and laughing, what a sight. I'd forgotten that surreal moment so long ago it seems untrue now, yet vivid. One of those memories where you can recreate exactly where you sat, the direction you faced, etc. Don't try this at home.
