Yes. These are exactly the metaphors Republicans were using:
That he rammed Obamacare down their throats and that it was passed in the middle of the night.

There is a definite feeling of being "forced" to accommodate others, be it in religion, civil rights, or culture. It can be taken as given that conservatives do not celebrate diversity.

after having been deprived of them for so long. They just have to stop legally discriminating against certain groups. Is it really that hard for these people?

Do they really feel that they legal system is FORCING them not to be racist, sexist, bigoted assholes? I guess it really must be that much of a stretch for a lot of these people if they feel "forced".

Few of them would own to being racists, misogynists, religiously intolerant. In their perspective, their behavior is perfectly acceptable -- even encouraged by their culture. Then someone comes along and tells them that they are in error, and are being oppressive and/or abusive. They reject such judgements, believing themselves to be one of the "good guys." Therefore, the criticism against them is either inaccurate or special pleading, or is designed to undermine the solid values under which they claim to operate.

So, yes, it is really that hard for them. Why should that be hard to understand? It is rather ironic when those who accuse others of lacking empathy, lack empathy themselves. It goes beyond irony when those who criticize others for mockery and unklndness, are mocking and unkind themselves. It creates a condition of war, under which every move or concession is seen as zero-sum, and threatening to those who are obliged to adapt.
