I transplanted it in June and moved it to a southern facing window, and oh my gosh.....blooms all over the plant. It's 3 years old and was never really blooming that well after the first year I bought it. My S-I-L said she leaves hers in the southern window all year and hers always had ton of blossoms. So, I replanted, and moved it and now am reaping the rewards.....wish I could send a photo. It's going to be just beautiful. Anyone else have holiday cactus??Control-Z

(34,386 posts)She had a green thumb like no other. I'm sure if she had planted a toothpick it would've grown. She had a Christmas Cactus (I think they're pretty much the same as a Thanksgiving cactus) that was always so heavy with blooms during the holidays that she had to tie it up or else it would tip right out of its huge, 16" pot. She belonged to the local Garden Club, and I remember one year she and her plant had their picture in the local paper for the amazing number of blooms on it. She gave slips of it to my mom, aunt, cousins, and me, but we could never get ours to grow like Grandma's. I remember she would put it in the basement "to rest" for about 6 weeks every year after blooming. Obviously that's not necessary if yours is in the window all the time, but it sure worked for her. Grandma kept hers in a southern facing window, too.
Thanks for the memory, and enjoy your beautiful plant!

(29,661 posts)and a Hawaiian Schefflera. I've kept the schefflera for going on 6 years, I received it as a rememberence of my sister's death, was one of so many at her funeral. So I am so excited I haven't killed them.

(34,386 posts)in 2014, so now I live in an apartment with 2 cats who are murder on live plants, so that part of my life is over. I do miss it, though. It sounds like your thumb isn't too black if you get the cactus to bloom and keep the Hawaiian scheff alive. Aphids and spider mites LOVE those Hawaiian scheffs, so check the undersides of the leaves occasionally for any tiny webbing or tiny green bugs darting around. If you spot them, dip the leaves & stems in a mixture of equal parts rubbing alcohol & water, with a couple squeezes of mild dish soap like Ivory. Leave on for a couple of minutes then swish the plant in clear, clean water. (I used to work at a plant store, too.)
Enjoy your gorgeous cactus--I'm jealous of you!

(2,805 posts)Mine are pretty much two time a year bloomers.
I'm not sure if it is their sun exposure or what but they are the most resilient plants I have ever owned.
I love ficus but they are doing great one day and dead the next. Never have gotten them quite right or jade plants for that matter. It is fun going to the local greenhouse to replace them because it smell great and is warm so I will give props for that.

(111,259 posts)but I have a black thumb here in the desert unless it's planted outdoors. Then it lives. I miss my portable indoor jungle.
I had an orange one that bloomed on Halloween. The pink and white ones always bloomed around Xmas.

(55,894 posts)I love them. Very rewarding plant.
IMO, the flower look a little like shrimp when in full bloom.

(5,693 posts)Give them very little water. Once the weather starts to cool, I bring them back inside, SW window, and give the thirsty little buggers plenty to drink. Have had them for 4 years now and have never been disappointed. My mom taught me that method.

(29,661 posts)and my two plants I think are the reason they're alive, less is more I was told. Of course I can only attest to the two plants I own.
