Muslim shopper wearing a hijab harassed by woman at grocery (Albuquerque)

https://www.abqjournal.com/896172/muslim-shopper-wearing-a-hijab-harassed-by-woman-at-grocery.html

Barney Lopez could hear the woman from across the Smith’s grocery store aisles.

“You’re a terrorist. Get out of here,” the woman, wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses, screamed at a female shopper wearing a hijab, a head covering worn by some Muslim women.

“I left my cart to see what was going on,” Lopez said.

The woman in the cap was pointing at the woman in the hijab, yelling “every racist thing you could imagine to say,” store manager Andrew Castillo said Friday.

On edit: I know this is happening all over the country, but it's an almost unheard of thing in ABQ.

1. I have lots of small business owners and workers in my neighborhood who are Muslim.

I live in Trump country (the very Republican Nassau county on LI), so the Muslims with whom I interact every day noticed my Hillary buttons and tee shirts. After a while, they felt safe talking about the coming election. There was one woman who would never say Hillary's name above a whisper.

When I saw them on the morning of November 9, they looked numb and stricken, but the thing that touched me most was the fact that they comforted me. I got hugs, and my hand was patted across store counters.

The people who were so horribly let down, so worried about their future, and so maligned by the partisans of the man who will sit in the White House found it in their hearts to reach out to me. I'll never forget it.

The most I've seen is people avert their eyes and walk away, like there are Muslim cooties.

I predicted booze even before I read the story. I'm gratified by the support the woman in the hijab got, it's more like what I see every day in this town. I do love that the screeching ranter's picture has been published. Shame on her.

Didn't you mean drunk screeching ranter? So glad to other shoppers closed ranks around this woman. They were very courageous.

... that because the Council on American-Islamic Relations issued a statement of support for the store employees she likely was Muslim.

8. K&R here is a 5th recommendation to publicize racist attacking Muslims in public for their beliefs.

I am sure devout Muslims are attacked more aggressively by racists when they are not in public places. Local police should respond to these public attacks with greater zeal.

10. Well,I'm chiming in with REVERSE-harassment by hijab-wearing employee

I was in Boston. In a bus station type hub place. There was a McDonalds.

So I went up to the unattended counter. And stood there waiting for an attendant.

So, *SUDDENLY* this person/employee/woman *POPPED* up (from being CROUCHED down) in front of me (across the counter) - and I was *STARTLED* - O.K.?!1 She was wearing the hijab.

I recovered myself from the *START*. And placed my order.

But this person was, I'm saying, making it look like I was being prejudiced.
