So the AP's blog has some new guidelines to handling the "alt-right"

"Avoid using the term generically and without definition, however, because it is not well known and the term may exist primarily as a public-relations device to make its supporters’ actual beliefs less clear and more acceptable to a broader audience. In the past we have called such beliefs racist, neo-Nazi or white supremacist."

snip~

"We should not limit ourselves to letting such groups define themselves, and instead should report their actions, associations, history and positions to reveal their actual beliefs and philosophy, as well as how others see them."

... As a note, I had to deactivate my "alt-right" de-normalization browser add-on to post this

I got the definition of identity politics as "a tendency for people of a particular religion, race, social background, etc., to form exclusive political alliances, moving away from traditional broad-based party politics." I don't disagree with that definition. I get that people may have different identities as beings in society.

Our side may emphasize the imperative of protecting the civil rights of all and we go further and list the specific marginalized groups by name.

The tweet, IMO, calls out those who would label that practice as identity politics.

I don't think it's meant to say with a broad stroke that civil rights and identity politics are the same thing.

At least that's my takeaway ~

I imagine that there are plenty of people who might criticize "identity politics" who, indeed, might oppose policy that in my opinion would bolster the rights of many people. For instance, perhaps there's someone out there who might think that advocacy for same sex marriage rights might represent "identity politics." If this is the case, I would disagree with such a person on that point.

"All crows are birds, but all birds are not crows." Except, obviously, and just for the purposes of this illustration or list "Civil rights are identity politics, but identity politics are not necessarily civil rights."
