10000 animals were left behind at the Ripley's Aquarium. The fire is almost on it but it's raining.

5. Gatlinburg hotels, homes destroyed in fires

GATLINBURG — Hillbilly Golf, major hotels, a good portion of Regan Drive and countless other businesses and homes have been destroyed in a blaze that has firefighters continuing their efforts overnight.

"The center of Gatlinburg looks good for now," said Newmansville Volunteer Fire Department Lt. Bobby Balding. "It's the apocalypse on both sides (of downtown)."

7. I drove roughy through there last week. Smoke for about 300 miles

I-81S to 40w to 75S

Smoke started in Wytheville VA (just south of Blacksburg) and ended in Chattanooga. There was a break around Knoxville but other than that it was like a campfire. There was another fire due west of Richmond VA that filled much of the Shenandoah valley with smoke.

It was so dry in NW Georgia that I carried a bottle of water with me when I went outside to smoke.

11. As of 10:00 am Eastern time, Ripley Aquarium is intact,as is Dollywood. Three resorts are destroyed.

Authorities are expressing concern for the wild animals of the Smoky Mountains and other outdoor animals due to poor air quality. They said it was 118 degrees F. in downtown Gatlinburg last night due to the heat of the fire. There's been some rain but it hasn't helped much and a lot of it evaporates before hitting the ground due to the intense heat.
