KPNX reported that the mother of the teen posted images of the cupcakes on social media in hopes of making the incident a teaching moment. The mother said that she believed the party goers knew what the symbol means because they had recently had a lesson at school about the Holocaust.
The girls reportedly told the mother that they did it to be funny. In a subsequent Facebook post, the mother said that the girls had apologized.
I honestly don't even know what to say about this. What kind of fucking parents do these kids have that they thought this was funny?

(4,150 posts)Goddamn idiots. Let those assholes spend 24 hours in a concentration camp & let them HOPE it's not of the "extermination" variety & THEN they can say how "funny" it was.

(90,765 posts)How could they think that would be funny? What the fuck is wrong with those girls?
As a child (and a young child, at that), my mother made a point of teaching us to be aware of prejudice and its impact. To be aware of hate and the damage it causes. Not to turn it into a joke to be laughed at.
The "teaching moment" those girls needed should have come years ago.
If after a lesson on the Holocaust this is what they got from it... Then I despair of any "teaching moment" doing them any good.

(82,849 posts)Right after 15 year old boys. No, it wasn't funny. No, it wasn't appropriate. I'd be hard on these girls, but not too hard. There is a lesson to be learned, and I'd hate to be held accountable for everything I thought and did when I was a callow lad of 15 (or even 25, 35, 45 or 55). I don't know these girls' situation, but I'd gamble that they're not yet beyond all hope of redemption.

a more thorough job of explaining the horror and inhumanity of those years.

(14,856 posts)These students wouldn't even know what a swastika is, or that it is relevant in any way to Jewish people, if they hadn't learned about it in history class.
they follow trump on social media.

(13,081 posts)Maybe a month ago. And when I say "Mexican," I mean "18 months in the US, it's my job to teach him English."
He kept doing it because he thought it was funny. Eventually, after he waited in the hallway while I cooled down, we talked about it (in Spanglish, because that's the best I've got). "It was, like, a hundred years ago. Who cares?"
I still don't know if empathy is something I can teach someone beyond conceptually (as opposed to actually feeling empathy), but at least I got him to understand the inappropriateness.
My point s that it's not just Anglo-Americans and Trump voters. Kids from all nations can be obnoxious, inappropriate little assholes at times. I appreciate the mother who wanted to use this as a teachable moment. Kids are very rarely "bad," they're just kids and kids do stupid shit sometimes.

They just feel much more free to express it now that their Dear Orange Leader has explicitly shown that anything goes.

(53,956 posts)I am sure it was just a joke and it wasn't really tasteless, in fact, the teens were probably just trying to "reclaim" the swastika and, once again, we Jews are showing we have no humor. It is like the Russian ice skaters who preformed a lovely routine in full concentration camp attire and we, Jews, just don't "get it" that is actually a lovely tribute and acknowledgement of the Holocaust.
EXTREME !!!
I almost while writing that, but, personally, that's how some see shit like this! (Don't...just don't...read the comments about the ice skaters in LBN!)
At least we didn't have people 'splaining to us in this thread why this was OK, questioning those who find it offensive, or minimizing it (well, comment sure did).
Missed you! Glad you are back.

He's everywhere now. I will never forgive those that voted for Trump. No, I don't want to understand their damn economic pain and anger. I was born poor but I wasn't born with hate in my heart. Swastika's on my local elementary school. They didn't even know what it was really-it said Fuck Trump AND Fuck Hillary. All they knew was that hate was the thing-this is what Trump has taught them.
