History repeating itself.

Like everyone here I'm greatly disturbed by the prospect of Donald Trump as actual President. My only hope is that he doesn't last very long in office.

I keep on thinking these days about King Edward VIII. He was King from the death of his father, January 20, 1936, until his abdication to marry the woman he loved, on December 10, 1936. During his brief time as King he was notorious for not paying much attention to the actual affairs of state, and government officials were horrified to learn that he rarely read what was in the red boxes, those containers of papers of state, and frequently left them out where anyone might have had access. He was also a great admirer of Adolf Hitler.

England benefitted enormously from its very conservative stand on divorce, and simply refused any sort of permission for Edward to marry his great love, Wallis Simpson, because by that time she had not one but two living ex-husbands. So Edward abdicated, leaving the throne to his brother Bertie, whom we know as King George VI, and after him to Elizabeth, the present queen.

In a creepy parallel, Donald Trump can't be bothered with security briefings and is a great admirer of Vladimir Putin. He himself has two living ex-wives, which I wouldn't care about at all except that so many Republicans with multiple marriages try to assert the higher moral ground over once married people like Hillary Clinton.

Great Britain was extremely fortunate that such a good man was waiting in the wings. We don't have his equal as Trump's understudy, alas.
