General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWho is your pick for President in 2020?
Yes, it is early, but in the spirit of trying to get past the firing squad environment on DU, how about we discuss the future together?
It isn't going to be Clinton or Sanders, so we have a clean slate.
Who do you think would be a good candidate?

(6,974 posts)And what I'm saying is that this country will be in HORRIBLE shape domestically and abroad after these next 4 years of a pence/tRump/putin administration. It'll be existing, but be in HORRIBLE shape, and I'm scared as HELL about my health care/insurance and related items.

(28,270 posts)the man-baby fascist that claims to be our President for the next 4 years.
A person who did all they could to stop the slash and burn of Dumpf's party against the safety net, such as it is.
Who held up the disastrous SCOTUS picks of Duh Furor to the very end. Who refused to get along, go along with the most dangerous threat to American democracy and freedom in my lifetime.
There will be great opportunities for leaders to emerge in the coming four years that may be virtually unknown right now.
I hope some in the democratic party step up to the challenge. Their country desperately needs them.

(10,005 posts)I'm not sure the Dem or GOP will even exist.
The candidates in 2020 will be, Melinda Gates (Dem) and
Travis Kalanick (GOP).
Also running for the Senate will be; Musk, Bezos, Cuban, and Cook.
All have real worth more than Trump.
The collapse of empires should be more absurd than tragic. You, sir, have shown us the way.

I have no idea who that could be. I am leery of Cory Booker and Julian Castro because they don't seem like true progressives.

Even if it's someone awful like Anthony Wiener or Rahm Emmanuel ( ). Just kidding! I think...
But Corey Booker, Julian Castro, Tim Kaine etc. are all interesting options. They won't run a woman again for some time. (Sigh)

In 2014 more people on DU were concerned about the 2016 presidential race than the pending Congressional election. We see the results of that.
One step at a time please.

(1,168 posts)But, I think it will be someone like Governor Wolf of PA. Or someone like him, a successful Governor with an extensive business background. True, he (Governor Wolf) will be 72 in 2020 but he looks young and vibrant.
Again, just my opinion. Part of it will depend on just how bad the trump administration is. The good news is we have 2+ years to develop and consider the relative merits of just such a candidate.
Think about Wolf for a minute, a positive is he would put PA back in the Democratic column no doubt about it. A negative, I just don't think he personally has that goal but we shall see.
Good discussion.

(6,342 posts)What's going to start crippling the party is our struggles in the states. Because we don't have much fresh and young blood coming up the ranks.
A lot of the people being mentioned are getting up in age. And most of them wont be very acceptable to the voters in the Rust Belt states. Once again, these candidates are all coming from big cities. They all have the same problem Hillary did...they don't know how to talk to rural voters. They dont know how to energize the youth.
Remember, we elect presidents with the Electoral College whether you agree with it or not. We need to stop running campaigns that are only designed to win the popular vote.

(169 posts)For someone most likely to inherit the Obama coalition of voters, I would say Kamala Harris if she decides to run. If you want someone who could get the Bernie vote then Elizabeth Warren is the best bet. Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand are other options for a more mainstream Democrat.

(10,500 posts)I think Elizabeth Warren can unite all the various factions of the party. I think she will run and I think she will win.

(18,837 posts)I see three options:
1). The Republicans hold onto Trump for a second term, come hell or high water, because if he ends up rubber-stamping everything Ryan and McConnell want, why get rid of him?
2). Trump quits or is impeached, Pence / Ryan 2020
4). Pence has had enough by 2020, Ryan and whoever 2020
So it's a matter of shutting down Ryan in 2020, and any Democrat who can do that will have my vote and my support.

(16 posts)Castro. He's got four years to get his game together, and I hope he does. His desire to rebuild inner-cities in his current role based on his life experience is a great start
He's young, eloquent, charismatic, he's got a beautiful family and a back story that will appeal to the working class. And yes, I believe it will appeal to much of the working class regardless of race.
Maybe more importantly he has no real baggage.
In many ways he could ride a very Obama-like wave if he prepares and executes correctly.
