Standing Rock Water Protectors Arent Going Anywhere: We Dont Go Until They Do

Despite the good news which came from the Army Corp of Engineers that the final permit had been denied on the Dakota Access Pipelines current path, many water protectors say that they arent going anywhere just yet.
Amid celebration over the decisive victory came the sobering reality that this may not yet be over. Just because officials denied the permit to the corporation, having millions of dollars invested with rich investors breathing down ones neck means that the corporation will not give up so easily.
In response to the threat of a defiant corporation ignoring the decision of the government, many water protectors have pledged not to leave the sacred grounds of Standing Rock until every last Oil Police member, construction crew, and corporate crony leave the land as well.
After having been lied to repeatedly, and after being physically attacked for exercising their constitutional rights, there is no real reason to believe officials when they say it is all over...

(15,220 posts)What is the significance of 01/01/17? I keep hearing that date as being relevant, but what, exactly is that significance?

(17,566 posts)The oil companies who contracted for deliveries through the pipeline back in 2014 have the opportunity to cancel their contracts if it's not up and rolling by 1/1/17.
Of course they could renegotiate, but prices and supplies have improved so much since 2014 that it may not be worth their while.
So the pipeline investors stand to lose bigly if it's not wrapped up by 1/1/17. A virtual impossibility at this point.
This is all "as I understand it." If I'm missing something, please feel free to let me know.
